On an unrelated and more sober topic, I'm feeling as guilty as I ever have in my life at the moment. We* have an adorable puppy that was neutered today, it's abut 14 hours later and he is miserable, in some pain (I think) and wearing a ring around his neck that he absolutely hates. The look of sadness and confusion in his eyes is hard to bear

I want to be able to wish we could explain and that he would understand why he has to wear the ring and be in discomfort but I don't think any explanation would go down well at all. It's seems like a rotten thing we have done.

I never said this is trivially easy. Effort in life is not trivially easy. This is why we have racism because effort is not existing to do things right.

Put him in a situation where his life is at risk and his buddies are nowhere to be found but a black guy comes to help him. (and i am not going to call this anything than black and white color difference stupid thing until the moment comes that the other person is suddenly only a human and color is irrelevant in the moment). Put him in a situation that a black doctor saves him or recovers his lost child or where he sees a black family that treated him right do the proper honorable thing in a situation (as he perceives it for people of his race) and his buddies treat them with terrible methods proving how massive morons and simplistic barbarians they are. They are now harming his friends.

Comedy? You call that comedy? Only personal example can defeat racism. He needs to see his idols fail at what his prejudiced target succeeds, in actually caring for him in some situation.

If his racism has other foundations that are important to him or his whatever level survival it will be impossible to give up but he will be very conflicted.

The movie gets that very clear. Its not comedy. The most moving moment in the movie is when he hits the black guy's open mouth in the pavement. This is the definition of hatred. To be unable to move away from this moment. But if another not only can move away from this moment but offer help instead offering insight in what joins us all together, our common humanity then yes "Hitler" and his pointless anger is in trouble and this guy's soul is now in torture chambers.

For every racist out there this is what has happened typically;

1) Lack of care to grow up properly with good examples in family. Personal intellectual laziness to understand the world better than a simplistic level lacking any empathy.

2) Plenty of selective bad examples from other races that are indeed real problems at some level but that are exaggerated simplistically ignoring conveniently other good examples (but not good examples directed at them at a personal level) .

3) Lack of empathy from those that oppose his ideas that further strengthen their hatred because they do not see in their opponent a remarkably better human being.

4) Brainwashing by endless list of prejudiced morons and endless examples of hysteria from the other side that ought to be a lot more reasonable in their choices to combat this problem.

You do not win by shaming these people. You win by taking them to a place that they will shame themselves and regret it deeply. Almost everyone has a heart given the proper circumstances. It is not easy to turn but its a great moment when it happens.

Racism exists because of ignorance on all sides and because some real problems exist that we do not dare to address taking personal responsibility and stopping seeing ourselves as victims but as examples of the kind of world we want to live in.

The SMP random thread is mainly for fun and interesting topics and lighthearted banter between posters and discussion of Beer and other alcoholic stimulates and the price of donuts in the UK. I'm tolerant of just about anything being posted here.

HOWEVER: This is basically a fun/lighthearted thread and it IS NOT here for the purpose of personal grudge matches between posters, or personal/political fights bleeding over from other forums, or personal vendettas against perceived wrongs on this or other forums on 2+2, or for actual serious personal problems that may require professional help/counselling, or if you plan on shooting yourself.
