I'm saying it's obviously wrong. It's wrong that the govt still institutionally takes people's right to life.

I wonder if you did a poll on this what you'd get. Should people be forced to work in prison for little/no pay? - and juxtapose this with is capital punishment good? I wonder how varied the results would be in the US.

How about reoffending rates? Offering prisoners work opportunities seems like a good thing for those prisoners which want those opportunities. However forced labour seems like it would have the opposite effect. Creating that little bit more animosity and anger towards the society which has locked them up. The society In which they are later going to be released back into.

What peeps don't always understand is that this isn't an ivory-tower discussion about the niceness or deservedness of forced prison labor.

The internal functioning of the prisons is completely dependant on this forced labor. If that labor is substantially withheld the prison systems themselves would quite literally collapse. Mass incarceration as we know it in the USA today would become impossible. Sure, a secondary goal of these strikes is to educate those of us on the outside of the un-niceness of forced prison labor. The primary goal is for those on the inside to directly collapse this system by refusing to be slaves.

Holman CF, Atmore, Al. September 24, 2016.

Last night at Holman prison an emergency situation developed as ALL of the officers assigned to the second shift waged a historic work strike for the first time in the history of the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Assistant Commissioner Grantt Culliver was dispatched to the prison, where he then had to order supervisors from another prison, Atmore CF, to report to Holman prison just to be able to serve meals. The officers at Holman, who have been defying ADOC policy and speaking publicly to the media, had communicated their plans to F.A.M. members, and expressed their support for non-violent and peaceful demonstrations against the human rights conditions existent at Holman.

Officers have also complained about overcrowding and the need for a mass release, more education and rehabilitation programs, as well as issues with disease and filth. Officers reserved their harshest criticism towards the Commissioner's officer and what they perceive as a lack leadership from Commissioner Dunno and Culliver...
You'd think when the guards walk off too, that that would be news. So far... no.

Story checks out. First I've heard about this. Googled and most popular oulet I saw reporting it was Mother Jones, not exactly MSM. Kaepernick could give this a mention and force it on the scene.

Alabama recently tried to fix-up their slavery by releasing non violent offenders from prison and essentially making prison for only violent convicts.

But since the prisons rely on profits form slave labor that involves working outside of prison, now the violent convicts are out doing stuff like janitorial work on college campuses.

According to the radio show I heard today with the Montgomery DA and a State Senator.
