Science marches on with the discovery of 4 additional elements and their official naming [Thanks to LASjayhawk for getting this noticed by SMP]. Below is a link to the IUPAC organization, the official entity that reviews findings and names new element, and the article; which I also reproduce in full below.

iupac-is-naming-the-four-new-elements-nihonium-moscovium-tennessine-and-oganesson

IUPAC is naming the four new elements nihonium, moscovium, tennessine, and oganesson

Following earlier reports that the claims for discovery of these elements have been fulfilled, the discoverers have been invited to propose names and the following are now disclosed for public review:

• Nihonium and symbol Nh, for the element 113,
• Moscovium and symbol Mc, for the element 115,
• Tennessine and symbol Ts, for the element 117, and
• Oganesson and symbol Og, for the element 118.

The IUPAC Inorganic Chemistry Division has reviewed and considered these proposals and recommends these for acceptance. A five-month public review is now set, expiring 8 November 2016, prior to the formal approval by the IUPAC Council.

The guidelines for the naming the elements were recently revised and shared with the discoverers to assist in their proposals. Keeping with tradition, newly discovered elements can be named after:

(a) a mythological concept or character (including an astronomical object),
(b) a mineral or similar substance,
(c) a place, or geographical region,
(d) a property of the element, or
(e) a scientist.

The names of all new elements in general would have an ending that reflects and maintains historical and chemical consistency. This would be in general “-ium” for elements belonging to groups 1-16, “-ine” for elements of group 17 and “-on” for elements of group 18. Finally, the names for new chemical elements in English should allow proper translation into other major languages.

For the element with atomic number 113 the discoverers at RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science (Japan) proposed the name nihonium and the symbol Nh. Nihon is one of the two ways to say “Japan” in Japanese, and literally mean “the Land of Rising Sun”. The name is proposed to make a direct connection to the nation where the element was discovered. Element 113 is the first element to have been discovered in an Asian country. While presenting this proposal, the team headed by Professor Kosuke Morita pays homage to the trailblazing work by Masataka Ogawa done in 1908 surrounding the discovery of element 43. The team also hopes that pride and faith in science will displace the lost trust of those who suffered from the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.

For the element with atomic number 115 the name proposed is moscovium with the symbol Mc and for element with atomic number 117, the name proposed is tennessine with the symbol Ts. These are in line with tradition honoring a place or geographical region and are proposed jointly by the discoverers at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna (Russia), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA), Vanderbilt University (USA) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA).

Moscovium is in recognition of the Moscow region and honors the ancient Russian land that is the home of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, where the discovery experiments were conducted using the Dubna Gas-Filled Recoil Separator in combination with the heavy ion accelerator capabilities of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions.
Tennessine is in recognition of the contribution of the Tennessee region, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, to superheavy element research, including the production and chemical separation of unique actinide target materials for superheavy element synthesis at ORNL’s High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC).

For the element with atomic number 118 the collaborating teams of discoverers at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna (Russia) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA) proposed the name oganesson and symbol Og. The proposal is in line with the tradition of honoring a scientist and recognizes Professor Yuri Oganessian (born 1933) for his pioneering contributions to transactinoid elements research. His many achievements include the discovery of superheavy elements and significant advances in the nuclear physics of superheavy nuclei including experimental evidence for the “island of stability”.

“It is a pleasure to see that specific places and names (country, state, city, and scientist) related to the new elements is recognized in these four names. Although these choices may perhaps be viewed by some as slightly self-indulgent, the names are completely in accordance with IUPAC rules”, commented Jan Reedijk, who corresponded with the various laboratories and invited the discoverers to make proposals. “In fact, I see it as thrilling to recognize that international collaborations were at the core of these discoveries and that these new names also make the discoveries somewhat tangible.”

Ultimately, and after the lapse of the public review, the final Recommendations will be published in the IUPAC journal Pure and Applied Chemistry. The Provisional Recommendation regarding the naming of the four new elements can be found on the IUPAC website at http://www.iupac.org/recommendations...by-the-public/.

Finally, laboratories are already working on searches for the elements in the 8th row of the periodic table, and they are also working to consolidate the identification of copernicium and heavier elements. To be able to evaluate this work, IUPAC and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) are currently reviewing the selection principle and operations of a future Joint Working Party (JWP) and as soon as these principles have been decided a new group will be formed. This new JWP will review new claims and the consistency of new results with those already evaluated by earlier JWPs.

********************************************

I can recall a college chemistry professor years ago predicting how the periodic table would be filled in one day. The Actinide series was complete at that time but the transition metals row had only been discovered and named up to about 105 or 106 at that time. His prediction that the row would be completed in our (the students) lifetimes has come to fruition. Science, the vanguard of all knowledge, plows on; with the rabble of humanity and its throbbing masses of ignorant poltroons stuck in its wake. This has been ongoing for more than 500 years. Humans will pass the promethean torch on to our children: The AI Robots.

A posse ad esse.

Graphene used in bodyworks of car

From above link:

The world's first car made with graphene in its bodywork has been unveiled in Manchester.

The vehicle, with graphene in its panels, was made by Briggs Automotive Company in Speke, Liverpool.

The BAC Mono spearheads an exhibition to highlight the future technology of graphene, which is 200 times stronger than steel.

It was developed by scientists at the University of Manchester in 2004, who won the Nobel Prize.

Graphene is made of sheets of carbon just one atom thick.

Pretty sure no one can make graphene sheets large enough to form panels like that. Sound like bull****ting stockholders to me.

It isn't one sheet.

As an aside, technically, if you just put some pencils in the body panels, you have made a body panel with graphene in it.

I think that's probably what happened. They added graphene flakes into the bodywork in a way that does nothing for the performance but let's them claim it's an advanced nanotechnology car.

From above link:

Antoine Delafargue and Michael de Lagarde started their journey in Plymouth, south-west England on Friday and hope to arrive in St Malo in western France 250 kilometres away on August 12.

"The submarine is on its way," said spokesperson for the project Gael Brelet.

"They are travelling at about three kilometres per hour."

The submarine reportedly weighs 3.5 tonnes and is six metres long. The two men are expected to pedal for up to 12 hours a day each.

CRISPR inspires new tricks-to edit genes

From above link:

CRISPR can quickly and efficiently manipulate virtually any gene in any plant or animal. In the four years since CRISPR has been around, researchers have used it to fix genetic diseases in animals, combat viruses, sterilize mosquitoes and prepare pig organs for human transplants. Most experts think that’s just the beginning. CRISPR’s powerful possibilities — even the controversial notions of creating “designer babies” and eradicating entire species — are stunning and sometimes frightening.

So far CRISPR’s biggest impact has been felt in basic biology labs around the world. The inexpensive, easy-to-use gene editor has made it possible for researchers to delve into fundamental mysteries of life in ways that had been difficult or impossible. Developmental biologist Robert Reed likens CRISPR to a computer mouse. “You can just point it at a place in the genome and you can do anything you want at that spot.”

Anything, that is, as long as it involves cutting DNA. CRISPR/Cas9 in its original incarnation is a homing device (the CRISPR part) that guides molecular scissors (the Cas9 enzyme) to a target section of DNA. Together, they work as a genetic-engineering cruise missile that disables or repairs a gene, or inserts something new where it cuts.

Science marches on with Great potential...............started by nature itself..............

everything-you-need-to-know-about-crispr-the-new-tool

From above link:

CRISPR is actually a naturally-occurring, ancient defense mechanism found in a wide range of bacteria. As far as back the 1980s, scientists observed a strange pattern in some bacterial genomes. One DNA sequence would be repeated over and over again, with unique sequences in between the repeats. They called this odd configuration “clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats,” or CRISPR.

This was all puzzling until scientists realized the unique sequences in between the repeats matched the DNA of viruses—specifically viruses that prey on bacteria. It turns out CRISPR is one part of the bacteria’s immune system, which keeps bits of dangerous viruses around so it can recognize and defend against those viruses next time they attack. The second part of the defense mechanism is a set of enzymes called Cas (CRISPR-associated proteins), which can precisely snip DNA and slice the hell out of invading viruses. Conveniently, the genes that encode for Cas are always sitting somewhere near the CRISPR sequences.

Study published in Nature changes current view on Earth's formation, composition and internal structure
University of Münster

All objects in our solar system are build from matter synthesized in previous generations of stars. Using high-precision isotope measurements of neodymium and samarium, scientists from Münster (Germany), Chicago and Livermore (USA) have now found that Earth contains more material from red giant stars than primitive meteorites (chondrites) located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Since their formation about 4.56 billion years ago, chondritic meteorites have not been modified substantially, and so have commonly been used to constrain the isotopic and chemical composition of bulk Earth. The accurate and precise knowledge of Earth’s composition is essential for determining its differentiation history, internal structure and geodynamic evolution. The study now published in Nature shows that chondritic meteorites - contrary to current assumptions – are not representative for Earth’ isotopic composition.

Only earth shaking for those that have an interest in Earth's formation - Heard about this Nature Paper on Facebook from a scientist that has a Phd from Caltech and is the smartest man in his own house. And since he is married that is quite an accomplishment. By the way, if confirmed, this will rewrite every Geology textbook on the planet. Except those in Iran and other demented and backward nations.

Woolly mammoth on verge of resurrection, scientists reveal.

Scientist leading ‘de-extinction’ effort says Harvard team could create hybrid mammoth-elephant embryo in two years.

woolly-mammoth-resurrection-scientists

From above link:

Our aim is to produce a hybrid elephant-mammoth embryo,” said Prof George Church. “Actually, it would be more like an elephant with a number of mammoth traits. We’re not there yet, but it could happen in a couple of years.”

The creature, sometimes referred to as a “mammophant”, would be partly elephant, but with features such as small ears, subcutaneous fat, long shaggy hair and cold-adapted blood. The mammoth genes for these traits are spliced into the elephant DNA using the powerful gene-editing tool, Crispr.

In post #164 above, I noted the importance of this new gene-editing tool Crispr. Human hybrids are just around the corner. I'm sure the Russians are already working on it.

One day billions of artificial intelligence guided spaceship supertankers will be mining this atmosphere for deuterium and usual hydrogen to fuel the entire solar system super-empire of thousands of new artificial earths of over a trillion humans and their machines on the way to 10 other solar systems already.

This right there is the ultimate source of energy in this solar system before we manage to eventually take the full mc^2 from any matter, which would make it a lot easier to have everything anywhere.

This is all that scientific society promises for you. Capitalism communism and socialism will never get you there.
