Will you be able to acquire a waver from the Department of Motor Vehicles to self drive your "Classic Car", say a 1955 GMC pickup, a 1972 Camaro, or 2015 Corvette?

Sorry, you will have to have find one of the tracks guaranteed to be in every state, where you can drive like Fred Flintstone. Computerized transporting vehicles will take you and your car there.

Why did it take five years for us to get the news?

Nice animation anyway!

Took them that long to massage the data and make it look right.

Re: Official SMP News Articles Thread

The commercial spaceflight company SpaceX announced on Twitter today that it plans to send its robotic Dragon capsule to Mars as early as 2018.

"Red Dragons will inform the overall Mars architecture," SpaceX representatives tweeted today (April 27), referring to the company's eventual plans to set up a colony on Mars — a key goal of SpaceX and its founder, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

A source familiar with the company’s plans said the first test flight of a Dragon capsule to Mars would demonstrate technologies needed to land large payloads on the Red Planet. That could include supplies and habitats for Martian explorers. In addition, the source said that SpaceX intends to reveal details of its colonization architecture later this year.

three earth-like planets discovered orbiting dwarf-star/

From above link:

For the first time, researchers have discovered three potentially habitable, Earth-like worlds orbiting an ultracool dwarf star 40 light-years away in another star system, according to a study published in the journal Nature.

The ultracool dwarf star, known as TRAPPIST-1, isn't the kind of star scientists expected to be a hub for planets. It's at the end of the range for what classifies as a star: half the temperature and a tenth the mass of the sun. TRAPPIST-1 is red, barely larger than Jupiter and too dim to be seen with the naked eye or even amateur telescopes from Earth.

But these tiny stars, along with brown dwarfs, are long-lived, common in the Milky Way and represent 25-50% of stellar objects in the galaxy, said study researcher Julien de Wit, a postdoctoral associate with MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences.

They were largely overlooked until researcher Michaël Gillon of the University of Liège in Belgium decided to take a risk and study the space around one of these dwarves. It paid off.

***********************************

Earth-like planets are everywhere, like a disease of the universe.

Human and robot system interaction in industrial settings is now possible thanks to ISO/TS 15066, a new ISO technical specification for collaborative robot system safety.
Quote:
Industrial robot systems are usually separated from humans to protect people from injury. However, with new technology advancements, there is growing potential to safely bring the power and precision of robots closer together with the creative and problem-solving ability of humans. This could dramatically increase productivity.
Quote:
“The fact is,” explains Carole Franklin, Secretary of ISO/TC 299/WG 3, “when robots work alongside humans, we have to be very careful that the application does not put a human in danger. Up until now, robot system suppliers and integrators only had general information about requirements for collaborative systems. ISO/TS 15066 is therefore a game changer for the industry. It gives specific, data-driven safety guidance needed to evaluate and control risks.”

Waiting for a multitude of applications.

Imagine if one day soon proton delocalization becomes magically deuterium delocalization facilitating cold fusion reactions. I mean its not that far behind anyway (2 times the mass only). Designing some specific catalyst geometry crystal or alloy where when Deuterium is placed it takes such positions that facilitates fusion.

Or imagine a system that is placed in some field that resonates and at some point interesting things start happening in terms of delocalization as some probability for barrier penetration is enhanced massively due to quantum effects of surrounding systems and applied field that would be a lot harder in vacuum.

Maybe some computer designed geometry with special properties that enables fusion reactions finally by bringing the non interested parties closer lol.

That would really be a battery size fusion reaction lol.

One can dream until equations kill something or bring to life something unexpected.

The lesson from cold fusion debacle is not to think always pseudoscience but actually see how it could happen if a lot of things cooperated.

After all catalysis is something similar. It makes reactions happen at much higher rates.

It might be interesting to spend some time to understand what is going on in these systems or how a fictitious properties system could help and see if it can be created with available elements and compounds. Who knows you can then also bombard it with muons, enclose it in uranium and combine a lot of funny things together and finally get to breakeven...(but probably not the last parts, i am kidding or not?)

You have to make the Deuterium nuclei not see each other as so repulsive anymore and facilitate barrier penetration.

Brain, what art we?

https://aeon.co/essays/your-brain-do...ot-a-computer?

Quote:
Because neither ‘memory banks’ nor ‘representations’ of stimuli exist in the brain, and because all that is required for us to function in the world is for the brain to change in an orderly way as a result of our experiences, there is no reason to believe that any two of us are changed the same way by the same experience. If you and I attend the same concert, the changes that occur in my brain when I listen to Beethoven’s 5th will almost certainly be completely different from the changes that occur in your brain. Those changes, whatever they are, are built on the unique neural structure that already exists, each structure having developed over a lifetime of unique experiences.

This is why, as Sir Frederic Bartlett demonstrated in his book Remembering (1932), no two people will repeat a story they have heard the same way and why, over time, their recitations of the story will diverge more and more. No ‘copy’ of the story is ever made; rather, each individual, upon hearing the story, changes to some extent – enough so that when asked about the story later (in some cases, days, months or even years after Bartlett first read them the story) – they can re-experience hearing the story to some extent, although not very well (see the first drawing of the dollar bill, above).

This is inspirational, I suppose, because it means that each of us is truly unique, not just in our genetic makeup, but even in the way our brains change over time. It is also depressing, because it makes the task of the neuroscientist daunting almost beyond imagination. For any given experience, orderly change could involve a thousand neurons, a million neurons or even the entire brain, with the pattern of change different in every brain.

Worse still, even if we had the ability to take a snapshot of all of the brain’s 86 billion neurons and then to simulate the state of those neurons in a computer, that vast pattern would mean nothing outside the body of the brain that produced it. This is perhaps the most egregious way in which the IP metaphor has distorted our thinking about human functioning. Whereas computers do store exact copies of data – copies that can persist unchanged for long periods of time, even if the power has been turned off – the brain maintains our intellect only as long as it remains alive. There is no on-off switch. Either the brain keeps functioning, or we disappear. What’s more, as the neurobiologist Steven Rose pointed out in The Future of the Brain (2005), a snapshot of the brain’s current state might also be meaningless unless we knew the entire life history of that brain’s owner – perhaps even about the social context in which he or she was raised.

Think how difficult this problem is. To understand even the basics of how the brain maintains the human intellect, we might need to know not just the current state of all 86 billion neurons and their 100 trillion interconnections, not just the varying strengths with which they are connected, and not just the states of more than 1,000 proteins that exist at each connection point, but how the moment-to-moment activity of the brain contributes to the integrity of the system. Add to this the uniqueness of each brain, brought about in part because of the uniqueness of each person’s life history, and Kandel’s prediction starts to sound overly optimistic. (In a recent op-ed in The New York Times, the neuroscientist Kenneth Miller suggested it will take ‘centuries’ just to figure out basic neuronal connectivity.)

Meanwhile, vast sums of money are being raised for brain research, based in some cases on faulty ideas and promises that cannot be kept. The most blatant instance of neuroscience gone awry, documented recently in a report in Scientific American, concerns the $1.3 billion Human Brain Project launched by the European Union in 2013. Convinced by the charismatic Henry Markram that he could create a simulation of the entire human brain on a supercomputer by the year 2023, and that such a model would revolutionise the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other disorders, EU officials funded his project with virtually no restrictions. Less than two years into it, the project turned into a ‘brain wreck’, and Markram was asked to step down.

We are organisms, not computers. Get over it. Let’s get on with the business of trying to understand ourselves, but without being encumbered by unnecessary intellectual baggage. The IP metaphor has had a half-century run, producing few, if any, insights along the way. The time has come to hit the DELETE key.

Along that line...
We need to make computers that have experiences. We need to think of computers as things that have experiences. Reminds me of bicentennial man and the episode of Star Trek when Data was on trial to decide his status as a life form.

This is a very dangerous path that can lead to solar system war easily. If we allow private enterprises to colonize the solar system then all hell breaks loose as the future value of eg Mars or even an asteroid is insanely amazing and cannot be claimed by any individual or country or we will allow capitalism to f*ck up everything in the future beyond earth and of course there will be fighting for who gets what at some point.

It is as if we are ok with whoever has enough money right now deciding the future of the solar system.

The space must always belong to all countries or a future unified planet. The moment we allow countries or individuals to start claiming territories we will have created a new era of wars outside earth.

I personally will never recognize any individual owning any real estate outside earth unless we all together come to some agreement that we open the system and whoever gets there and settle it can claim it for themselves and we are all fine with it being that way.

My point being the US or China or Russia or whoever do not own the moon and the other bodies. And they have no right allowing anyone to do things there without the consent of the rest of the planet. Whoever is doing things there ought to be doing it on behalf of mankind or its open season and every country has any right to declare war to another outside earth for a location.

If we suddenly decide whoever gets there first claims it then we will have an instant space race that will dominate all activities quickly and which in a way is great but it will come with conflicts always.

These things and how we will approach the issue of ownership need to be internationally decided and signed in order for them to have a legal and ethical foundation.

I do not recognize the ethical right of a rich individual to claim an entire planet for example just because they can get there since their wealth is a direct product of the exploitation of the rest of society in a way. We have f*cked up one planet but to f*ck up the entire system is beyond insane before we are united in some sense.

There is little to no chance of it leading to a major war.

You do realize that there are few people who inhabit the moon, right? The entire death toll if we were to bomb the **** out of Titan would be rather small. I don't read the industry papers, but I am pretty sure that no one actually lives there.

Yes because i was of course imagining that people live here now right? And not that it will become a space race for territory and there will be fighting among settlers and far west logic all over again.

My point is that these things have immense value and nobody has the right to claim them to further secure an endless tyranny of few so its a vastly arrogant thing for any country to authorize companies (the new holly concept that replaced nations suddenly) to go there as it they own it.

How would you feel if China said i allow all my companies to settle the moon (see what they have done to artificial islands in South China sea and imagine what would happen if they said about the moon)?

War between major powers has become quite unpopular amongst the major powers.

Might as well worry about feudalism.
