"Most lucrative academic prize in the world"

3 million dollars each awarded to

Alan Guth
Nima Arkani-Hamed
Juan Maldacena
Nati Seiberg
Ed Witten
Andrei Linde
Maxim Kontsevich
Ashoke Sen
Alexei Kitaev

The prize was awarded by a Russian billionaire who chose the winners himself and hasn't given a strict guideline for why these people were chosen. Guess somebody needs to start an all time money leader board for math/physics now

The ability to do something like this is among the few reasons I would really want to be extremely rich and I think it's awesome he did this.

How about 't Hooft or among our own local heroes Susskind and Laughlin both good company to Linde.

I can assure you they dont give a damn because what really matters for them is either inside them keeping happy already with their lives or in their thoughts keeping them active until the day they die chasing something trillions of times more important than all money of the planet and something that in the end money alone cannot buy but character does.

Yeah, this is pretty lol. Just because they are really smart doesn't mean they don't care about power, prestige, fame, money etc. Just imagine how Newton would have reacted if Hooke or Leibniz won some prestigious prize and he didn't.

Alan Guth really only had $200 in the bank? I find that hard to believe.

The article mentions "one that only had a balance of $200." Irrelevant because he probably opened it just for the award transaction. Never can be too careful what with all those Nigerian scams and all....
