There was a time when Electric Light Orchestra was among the greatest bands on earth. Symphonic rock.

Since Kant's noumenon keeps coming up so much:

Sure there was. Round about the time when Evel Knievel was the world's best athlete and The Partridge Family was among the greatest TV shows ever made.

Another great band from that era, with a bit more realistic approach

okay if he means ELO were one of the geatest in the same way as the partridge family was one of the greatest then who could disagree.

though now it seems a bit unfair on ELO who produced several minutes of truly good stuff.

would recommend checking out this scando band, supporting Muse here. Bad sound (GoPro) but the drummer is a beast

I was going to be mean and post something from Jefferson Starship to escalate things. Couldn't bring myself to do it though.

As the theme continued a bit longer than I expected, I will just put gasoline on the fire:

I want to let you know that this is entirely your fault:

(DON'T look away from the screen for maximum effect)

(same for not looking away)

And for the killing blow:

(must be watched the entire way through for maximum effect - Blondie rapping)

Was about to post this in the history forum, but it can't hurt with a lesson here also

As the post has to end with Blondie: guys, beware for what science can accomplish, but if you are put in the situation, try to appreciate the glowing hair!

Wow, I haven't seen this before, but it's probably the best representation of the 80's ever!
10-27-2013 , 09:42 AM
Blondie counts as 70s to me. Cant be representative of the 80s just because they hadn't quite died yet.

One of many of the later half of the 70s revival.
10-27-2013 , 10:28 AM
It was Brian who started to mix in the 80's, didn't warn us . ELO and Abba, like Blondie were bands of the 70's, that's correct, doing some good stuff in the first years of the 80's doesn't change that. But as always, we have shades of grey.

The 80's I like the most though of any decade, if having to choose.

WALPURGIS NIGHT
(Rob Coffinshaker)

The witches are flying east from the dying of the sun
Bonfires light up their ride, the night has just begun
Jet-black shadows lead the way, dancing in delight
While the light of day gives way to the night

Demons will awake tonight and Lucifer await
Risen from the depths of Hell, beyond the seven gates
A sacrifice is prepared to the dark lords delight
While the moon is rising in the eastern sky

Let ’em go, let ’em go
Since the dawn of time they’ve awaited what the Devil might bestow
Let ’em go, let ’em go
And the pyres burn bright on Walpurgis Night

Beyond the dark horizon in a place not known by man
The witches now are gathered ’till the dawn comes to the land
The Sabbath has begun under cover of the gloom
Below the watching eye of the moon

Let ’em go, let ’em go
Since the dawn of time they’ve awaited what the Devil might bestow
Let ’em go, let ’em go
And the pyres burn bright on Walpurgis Night

Heard this at Barnes & Noble Saturday night, as I sat reading "Our Final Invention". Basically put the book down to listen to the song, repetitive though it may be. Love[d] it...was surprised to find it was MGMT. Then again, prior to this, I only knew their radio songs, and had less knowledge of their actual modus operandi (although the lyrics of one of those hits, "Time To Pretend", which featured gloriously in "21" (Mezrich's book being better than the movie, though) should've probably indicated to me that they were capable of this sort of thing)

While on the subject of all-caps-entitled bands, I'll fall asleep listening to this. Regional effort (Toronto ain't far from me)...infectious, melodic, and possessing a better song title than nearly any other song ever (same goes for the band name, really)
