Ummmm. We can see what you typed, you non-existent person person. As a wise person once nearly said "Errant incondite, ergo sum."

Also, Douglas Adams would have disagreed. Small and inconsequential and impermanent in the grand scheme of things has nothing to do with lack of existence at all. "Unimportant on such a scale is good," he would likely say.

Local effects exist and are quite important to those in your vicinity (not us, of course). I'm fairly sure that the fine drink you had last night had an effect on you and that you have at least had some effect on at least a few toilettes in your time.

Does such logic leave room for being a pedant? Not in my book. Everything is absurd; therefore, _______

So we all accept reductionism? Do we accept it as it pertains to our brains, truly? Do you question that **** every day like I do as I live out my mundane tasks? Wondering if I should be questioning my tenuous sanity at any given decision point?

When I glossed over "Incognito" by Eagleman-wannabe-Sagan (of neuroscience), I'm pretty sure he portrayed consciousness as like 20% of the brain's activity that happened to be in our temporary "attention". I did not feel compelled to read further, for fear that I would lose my mind.

Go ahead, read further. Truly figure it out. Then report back to me. Be a hero. A hero for neuroscience. At your own expense. I walk the tightrope as it is; you go ahead and teeter over, and I'll praise your efforts, for whatEVER that's worth.

Sounds like something Hunter Thompson might have written had he embedded himself in Berkley's philosophy department rather than the Hells Angels or Kentucky Derby. We may be seeing the birth of Gonzo Philosophy.

I'm tempted to go see "The Lone Ranger" when it comes out.

Lol. Thank you sir. This is a far better/more enjoyable response than any other I've gotten. Execpt I do recall that you also responded well to the post regarding Shelly Kagan's course on death...the two-state requirement...I liked that one as well. Cheers to you my friend.

Depends on the definition of existence. If I'm predestined to be a -9 month to 120-year lifeform that carries and may replicate a certain strand of amino acids, in the context of a universe that has existed 13.8 billion years before me and untold years afterwards, can I TRULY be said to exist?

It does not at all depend on the definition of existence.

It is a true statement that Matt exists. We can point at it.

Being ephemeral just means that it isn't always a true statement. It is right now, and that is true of everything that exists right now.

Predestination is a misconception. You have no idea of when you will step in front of the bus and the universe isn't big enough to calculate it ahead of time. It has proven this simply fact by having not had that day yet.

On being a self-replicating being, that is just one of your product features. Thoroughly incomplete to think that is all that one is. What you really are is a bunch of subatomic particles, but I think that you will find that if you are sent to the store to buy a loaf of bread that you will have failed the assigned task if you bring home just any old bag of subatomic particles.

Along the same line of thought, I used to leave for the day after locking my bedroom door with this playing on repeat on my 45 player at max volume just to annoy my mom:

Had to pay for a couple of doors before dear old dad taught her about circuit breakers.

I always found the Smiths most uplifting. It was difficult to choose which tracks to list, chose the first one with Matt in mind and Panic to cope with masque.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH18_dZIYOE was considered for you. Obvious or need a research project or both

Seems a bit benign, special reason?

Crass Mother Earth would be more my cup of tea.

I have mixed feelings about The Smiths. Got some nostalgia for them in the same way that I have some nostalgia for political correctness. They were necessary at the time in much the same way.

I hear the song and I hear Morrissey just yelling at me in a an unnecessary way.

I am not nearly so shallow as to judge based on boob size (or now that I am older and can't stand the young ones, length*). I have always judged a woman's worth purely on how much she worships my important bits.

As my woman would say, "really?!? You said that out loud?"

The one stable thing in life is that Fleetwood Mac is an unmitigated good thing.

I am confused. What I handed you was a train wreck of a song from what was a non-offensive band. You handed me back a song that sounds exactly like any other from a band.

Please explain.

Dont thinkl they were necessary, no-one would have noticed if they had never existed.

How good they were is unclear but by the standards of the times they were outstanding.

I think there was some irony.

Because of the music they constantly play.

I had no lock so this is hypothetical but I strongly suspect the record player would have suffered very badly.

It was just about music and this particular community's ability to turn a thread of questionable relevance into a discussion.

It has the added bonus of having links to songs from people that are generally known to be trustworthy to attempt to not steer people wrong that can be clicked on if people with to do so. That is nice.

If I were you, I'd either be interested or uninterested. Luckily, you are already you, so you don't really need advice on whether it is worth your while.
