Read up on the oldest person in the world:

Quote:
She lives by the Golden Rule: “Treat others the way you want to be treated”. Known in the community for her wisdom and wit, she has sometimes been asked for advice. She has previously advised people to use common sense, saying “I don’t have much education but what little sense I got, I try to use it”.[14]

She just died. So there are two left. Here is a fun article about Susannah Jones, the new oldest person.

http://metro.co.uk/2015/06/20/the-wo...gerie-5255467/

Actually both of the two left appear to be quite active. But given how quickly the rest have gone I doubt that either of them will see the year out.

It is strange to think that when I started this thread there were 100-130 of them, and only 1 of those made it to 117 years. But 3 of them are in the Top 10 of all time. 117 years seems to be the barrier to beat. 5 people have done it, and somehow one of them got to 122.

People used to say i wish you to live to be 100. I have modified my wish to be; "I wish you to live long enough to remember once upon a time you were 100". (that implicitly incorporates the wish to not have Alzheimer's/ not being senile etc which is kind of an extra one lol)

Of course there are better wishes to give that reflect quality of life but that is another issue. It is kind of ridiculous to wish on his birthday to an uncle of my father who is 97 to see 100. (that old timer is actually smart enough to get the above parenthesis, we used to play BG and chess when i was a little boy and he was already a grandpa. Now every time we speak he asks me why i havent married yet!)

They are both still alive 7 months later. But the eldest is still 5 months from reaching the 117 barrier that only 5 others have passed before.

January 2009-------100-130
November 2010-------70
December 2011-------37
November 2012-------21
June 2013-------------11
November 2014-------6
April 2015-------------3
June 2015--------------2
January 2016----------2

I like the last ones are holding on! Let one of them reach the outlying 120!

I could live with dying on exactly my 120th birthday. That would be my last mathematical statement, showing respect for the craft (science?)

May we all die one day when living another one would be still worth it due to interesting unfinished business and still old enough to not care if we did, because we have finally achieved internal peace with the world, the way the universe works and built confidence in the victory still ahead for all complexity. The echo of our lives never truly lost in the only observer that counts, a world without us in it anymore but also more beautiful than we found it.

Failing that, drowning in p***y would be great too.

Am I missing something? People win on lotteries as well. But you are right: a possibility of 10^-10 is practically nothing.

Or maybe you mean I couldn't live with dying? Congrats! Remember though I could both live and die on that big day. Both eat the cake and not.

Complexity lost a good friend ...

And we are left wondering what is a life well lived...May it take a long time to find out and a lot longer to do something about it!

Why? Nobody born in 1900 (the last year of the 19th century) left?

1900 is not the last year of 19th century. It is the first year of the twentieth century. The century starts at 0 not at 1. At the first second of 1900 you are already at 20th century even if you gave 1900 and 00 seconds to the other century for fun. The century ends at 1899.99999

The day you are born is not your zeroth year, its your first year. Your age is 0.00001 etc at that point (excluding conception age that is the true age of course) but you are at the first year of your life.

Basically this;

"The 20th century was a century that began on January 1, 1901[3] and ended on December 31, 2000." in here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20th_century is total utter bull-crap.

At some bloody point that all starts ie 00 big bang to make a point you are instantly at the first century of the universe or whatever you are not at the 0 century!

The millennium celebration took place in midnight dec 31 1999 to jan 1 2000 not in December 31 2000 01 jan 2001.

So why on earth would you label this the completion of the millennium and the start of the new one if it wasn't the end of the 20th century for example.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millen...m_celebrations

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601

Basically https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar got it stupidly wrong at start so we are living in 2016 actually right now but whatever since the bs started the wrong way we have to draw the line at continuing stupidity indefinitely because you do not start numbers at 1 , you start them at 0 and 0-0.999999... is the first interval...

It should be the 18 hundreds, 19 hundreds and 20 hundreds. Or 1800s, 1900s, 2000s. Like it's the 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s.

English has it wrong, with that illogical "th century" stuff. We should be glad I didn't miss this with (about) hundred years.

But 20th Century Fox looks just right nowadays.

masque, as you are mentioning the glorious millennium celebration, I remember there was critique for that we celebrated one year too early . What we really celebrated was the change of all the numbers, but it was worth it!

Guess the zero wasn't invented when this tradition started. And having Jesus to be born year zero, even if the zero was known to pope Gregorious the Great? Don't think so. That would have been stupid back then.
