Just read on Michio Kaku's Facebook page how NASA is having a press conference tomorrow to announce an as of yet unknown major finding in the field of astrobiology. All the reports I've read are saying that life based on some other chemical have been found, possibly here on Earth. Sources are saying that arsenic based life was found in Yosemite park, showing that life must have evolved twice.

These big announcements from NASA are usually a bit of a let-down after the build-up they get in the media (I know, I know, journalists blah blah, etc), but if the announcement is what you say it is, this would be way over my expectations!

I´m a bit disappointed. Does NASA have such funding problems that they have to be this desperate for attention?

I hadn´t expected things going this far, I have a soft spot for space exploration, please don´t degrade this to just any ordinary lobbying thing.

So you don't think that researching earth based stuff like that pond will be beneficial to future space exploration of other planets/moons/etc.?

Yes it could be, but NASA having to shout out this kind of findings to the world? "NASAs major breakthrough: we searched a pond on earth and found normal DNA with at twist".

This does not sound correct, from what I have read

This is not my field of expertise, but Rosie Redfield's blog post on the topic seem like a pretty solid critique of the article. The comments on the blog post are also high quality.

Great link. The sci-fi nerd in me was hoping for more. Disappointing.
