It's basically just the sorites paradox. As has already been said, there is no first chicken and no first chicken egg so it's meaningless to ask which came first. Neither did.

It depends. Does the egg count as part of the mother or part of the offspring. In other words, if a pre-chicken makes an egg and a chicken hatches out of it, is the egg a pre-chicken egg or a chicken egg?

(Though, I guess the above is simply a more transparent way to state the original question)

rofl at making a bet on which came first. Made my day with that one.

Technically, though, it would be the egg since the "first" of the chicken species would begin life as such.

Is this true? I had always thought any genetic mutations occurred at conception, in which case the first chicken would be conceived and grow into the first chicken-egg (by which I claim that the chicken came first)

This is one of those ambiguous questions that can be answered either way correctly, depending on exactly how you interpret it. There's no right answer.

Next week: Will a plane take off if it's on a runway that moves backwards at the same rate as its wheels move forwards?

Can a long jumper make a long jump from a treadmill going the same speed?

Doesn't depend on how the question is asked:

Which came first,

a. the chicken or the egg
b. the egg or the chicken

...as the long jumper? No, he will probably go backward instead.

Why?

I think my answer is the closest to correct as one can get given the binary options.

It stuns me that even with there being a low content thread and a fringe topics thread, this thread keeps popping to the top of the page.

Seriously, what is wrong with you people?

What's a low content thread? And this is definitely not fringe LOL

I bet Walter would know the answer to this age old question

Dinosaurs laid eggs. Chickens are descendants of dinosaurs. Therefore, the egg came first.

Okay, so technically if you want to separate the egg during gestation from the chicken at conception and through gestation, the chicken came first. But thats getting a little nitty about the scenario.

Yes, the "chicken as we know it" is inside the egg and the egg was formed by the "not a chicken as we know it" so yah, you could be Super Nit and say the chicken came first.

But I'm pretty sure when the question is asked, the differentiation is clear that the "chicken" is the one who laid said egg that contains the "as we know it chicken."

Could possibly be answered empirically, though it might be difficult to agree on what are the necessary qualities of an egg/chicken, and there might be a problem with objectivity considered that those qualities are simply asserted as being necessarily egg-y or chicken-y.

But, if we had a time machine and a reliable checklist of qualities, we could observe each pseudo-chicken and pseudo-egg and declare the first one that evolved to be a full-fledged egg/chicken (according to our subjective assertions; take a poll maybe?)

chicken --> egg --> and then bacon!

Which came first, the midday snack or brunch?

I think DDNK has a valid point. The chicken cannot arrive until the appropriate vehicle is assembled for it.

Something like that anyways
