It's basically just the sorites paradox. As has already been said, there is no first chicken and no first chicken egg so it's meaningless to ask which came first. Neither did.

It depends. Does the egg count as part of the mother or part of the offspring. In other words, if a pre-chicken makes an egg and a chicken hatches out of it, is the egg a pre-chicken egg or a chicken egg?

(Though, I guess the above is simply a more transparent way to state the original question)

Technically, though, it would be the egg since the "first" of the chicken species would begin life as such.

This is one of those ambiguous questions that can be answered either way correctly, depending on exactly how you interpret it. There's no right answer.

Okay, so technically if you want to separate the egg during gestation from the chicken at conception and through gestation, the chicken came first. But thats getting a little nitty about the scenario.

Yes, the "chicken as we know it" is inside the egg and the egg was formed by the "not a chicken as we know it" so yah, you could be Super Nit and say the chicken came first.

But I'm pretty sure when the question is asked, the differentiation is clear that the "chicken" is the one who laid said egg that contains the "as we know it chicken."

Could possibly be answered empirically, though it might be difficult to agree on what are the necessary qualities of an egg/chicken, and there might be a problem with objectivity considered that those qualities are simply asserted as being necessarily egg-y or chicken-y.

But, if we had a time machine and a reliable checklist of qualities, we could observe each pseudo-chicken and pseudo-egg and declare the first one that evolved to be a full-fledged egg/chicken (according to our subjective assertions; take a poll maybe?)
