its been years and I have forgot ><

anychance someone can write this out each step? I will understand if I see it

(1-x)(1-0.03)^2 = 0.667

answer is x = 0.291 but I get confused.


is first step

(1-x)(1-0.03)(1-0.03) = .667 ?

or

(1-x)(1-0.03)(1+0.03) = .667 ?

Do not confuse (1-0.03)^2=(1-0.03)*(1-0.03) with (1-0.03^2)=(1-0.03)*(1+0.03)



When you have A*B=C and you need to find A what you do is divide both sides with B so A=C/B

here A=1-x, C=0.667 and B=(1-0.03)^2.

The first step is to evaluate B=(1-0.03)^2=0.97^2=0.9409

So 1-x=0.667/0.9409=0.7089 so x=1-0.7089=0.2911.

Equation solving is a series of steps done intended to simplify expressions until you arrive at the form x=something.

Try to solve for example (3-x)*(4+1)^2=100.

In each step you simplify the expression, for example the above is ;

(3-x)*5^2=100 => (3-x)*25=100 => 3-x=100/25=4 => 3-x=4 => 3=4+x=> 3-4=x => x=-1.

Also post these in homework thread next time.

Do you know what squared (^2) means? If so, I don't see how you could possible think that (1 - 0.03)^2 = (1 - 0.03)(1 + 0.03) and not (1 - 0.03)(1 - 0.03).

Unless I'm misunderstanding something?

havent read the responses closely but excited to be able to help you

two things i think are important here:

1) the notation of (1-0.03) is bit confusing on first glance. not a way i am used to seeing numbers expressed........ obviously it's 0.97 but it threw me at first in the equation

2) the second thing, and far more important, is order of operations. you square the 0.97 by itself. you don't square the entire (.97-.97x)... obviously makes things much much easier.

so now it's 0.941 times (1-x) = .667.... then divide both sides by 0.941

so (1-x) = 0.71 ............ x = 0.29... rounded the numbers a bit at different stages.

repeating but the (1-0.03) threw me off at first too. strange thing to see in an equation. usually you don't have to reduce basic numbers at the start.

feel free to ask anything here or in PM.... no such thing as a dumb question. i've asked questions at my job that you would think i should have known the answer 10 years ago. and seen many others do the same thing.

Certain polynomials of the form x^2-A can be reduced to (x-sqrt(A))*(x+sqrt(A)). As masque pointed out (1-.03^2)<>(1-.03)^2. (1-.03^2) would be equal to (1-.03)*(1+.03) since 1^2 = 1 and sqrt(.03^2) = .03. So guessing op just got a little confused when that trick can be applied.
