Re: US Men's National Soccer Team Thread: 2011 and Beyond

Just read Ives column about 2014. Some good names to watch out for, Charles Renken FTW. I remember reading a big piece soccernet did about him years ago, hopefully he makes it.

I hate hate hate hate the question marks on if they will play for the USA or other country.

This would be cool. I'd be willing to help with whatever if needed.

First entry in the FAQ. I heard there was an EPL version somewhere too.

its still pretty low profile and most of the clubs are so new. But, the games are actually better than you think they would be. I dunno, maybe try getting into the RB's? There are so many sports though, especially for guys in NYC that I can see it being hard getting into another team, a small one at that too.

ESPN shows one HD game a week, usually on thursdays. You might be able to get a game or two on a local Fox Sports channel.

Ya they had one on tonight. I'm tempted to get in to supporting my local side and going to some games, I'm a little put off by the standard of play, but then I guess it's the same as some guy who lives in Luton supporting Luton because that's his local side.

p.s apparently Henry to NYRB is a done deal.

dean, getting to oak brook terrace is a PITA from anywhere but the western and southwest burbs. Great park, **** placement. I'd get to more games if I didn't work on saturdays. I used to go to at least 6 matches a year when they were at soldier field

the Fire play in bridgeport, not oak brook terrace
and, I agree, it's ****ty to get to. Amazing that they aren't off the CTA or Metra even.
Soldier Field just looked way too empty for the Fire games

Don't they have a shuttle that runs from the whatever line goes out there?

Re: US Men's National Soccer Team Thread: 2011 and Beyond

maybe, the closest stop would be the Orange line at Midway
that's a long ride to then go through airport traffic and shuttle over

Checked, and it does. Take the orange to midway, then a shuttle. It'd take 1.5 hrs for me to get there through the cta from wrigleyville.

bridgeview, oak brook terrace, doesn't matter coming from the north (or city), its still a PITA

an express line there on match days would be huge, but I don't see why they couldn't have found land that was more city accessible rather than having it sorta close to I-55. Pretty much chopped off the legs of most of the supporters that went to the games previously

The Netherlands beating Brazil provides sufficient grounds to legalize marijuana four years from now. I mean the only way they could have done it is to be on drugs, right?

IIRC, It was a Mayor Daley kickback to a beloved neighborhood

it's the worst of both worlds... it's not in the city proper where it could get huge support
it's not along interstate routes in affluent suburbs (which would have been a lamer crowd, but filled the stadium easier)

nope, its in an industrial area with basically nothing else around. I was back in NYC/NJ for a short trip and IMO having red bull arena in either brooklyn or queens would've been much more smart

mburke: there is a NJ transit stop next to the stadium

its probably near impossible to get the city to allow that to happen tho.

Nope. Not so easily accessible for the NYC crowd (I mean, they can get trains and stuff but it's a PITA, especially because they're so crowded).

For the North Jersey crowd it's bad too, because there's practically nowhere to park, and it really is in the middle of an industrial zone with like nothing around.

Awful location. That's why the things always only half full, despite being in one of the more soccer-crazy areas of the country.

It is a really awesome stadium though.
