I need to check this years WC roster, but Landy Cakes will be 32 come the 2014 WC. I'm interested to see how many current players are that old or older. I'm guessing a very small number if any.

Dempsey is about the same age as Lando. But as long as neither of them run into some injury issues Id expect them both to be back in 2014.

A 24 yr old version of Altidore should be significantly better imo, I stress the word SHOULD. Theres a reason I didnt use the word WILL.

I think Donovan is kind of in the Steve Nash mold at this point. He's realize what he's good at and what training regimen is going to help him maintain his strengths. Barring injury I'd be surprised if he was much less-effective in 2014. I'm penciling him in anyway.

Landon is crazily fit. He rarely has injury problems, he's fast, and can run all day. He's certainly the type of player that generally ages well and should be expected to still be at a high level in 2014.

I read something about the USMNT training regime that said in terms of physical gifts (pace, endurance, recovery) that are most important to a soccer player, Landon and Michael Bradley were head and shoulders over everyone else in the pool.

Dempsey it's harder to say, but barring major injury setback there's no reason he can't play in Brazil. 31 and 32 years old is not so old. Although perhaps one or both of them will either have a smaller role or come off the bench or something. I wouldn't be surprised to see Landy take the armband for this cycle since Boca will probably be moving on from the international game.

2014 WC roster: What do we definitely have, what do we probably have, what do we need, and who can that be?

Goalies: we're good. I don't see Timmay retiring from international play, and even if he does it seems like we always have someone ready to play.

Defense: Gooch will still be in the mix. Boca is already a slower wing back and, at 31, I don't know if he's here in 4 years unless he moves central. Spector needs to get better, but he's young so that's possible. Dolo, Goodson, and DeMerit are likely gone. Bornstein, sigh.

On the horizon: Chad Marshall could be a solid back, probably center and maybe right. Michael Orozco is a CB with a lot of experience in Mexico and MLS, but always seems to have serious mental lapses. He's played LB before also but not too impressively, imo. Marvell Wynne, gtfo at wing back, but has looked shockingly solid with Colorado as a center back. Edgar Castillo is a VERY interesting option at LB, lots of pace and offensive awareness. Could be interesting. I've put my faith in Omar Gonzalez and think he's going to be a rock for the USMNT in the future. Heath Pearce, so hit or miss as a LB. Played great against Argentina and a couple others, looked awful in qualifying. Jermaine Jones? Dude is older, plays d-mid and I think could very possibly slot back into the back line. Gale Agbossoumonde, I hate trying to project out an 18 year old, but he's a giant CB. Eric Lichaj could be a RB, but he keeps getting loaned out from Aston Villa. I need to see more minutes from him.

Overall: Please God let us find some outside backs. We'll be able to fill the center backs without too much dropoff I think but we would be a much better team with wing backs.

Midfield: Bradley will still be here and could be a captain ione day. Deuce and Lando are in kind of the same boat. They'll be 31 and 32 respectively, I think they'll still be capable of adding to the team, but will there be better options? It'll be interesting. Mo is almost certainly going to be around, he just needs to get and stay healthy and keep on pwning. According to someone who played college soccer at Clemson Holden wants it as much as anyone he's ever seen in any sport, so I have faith that he'll be in the mix. Torres I also like, but he seems more expendable assuming the older guys stick around unless he improves. Benny needs to get some more play before I'm comfortable thinking he'll be around. Thanks for your service Beas, but you're done. Rico, it was a good one off.

On the horizon: Bob has a love affair with Kljestan, we'll see if his move to Europe improves his game and makes his a viable choice in the future. Alejandro Bedoya is a good bet to be around, especially once he "Charlie Davies" it and goes to a better league from Sweden. Chris Pontius seems like a lock to be considered in a M/F role. God I want Geoff Cameron to get just a little better because he can play almost every outfield position well and would be a great stopgap for depth. It seems weird to write-off 23 year olds like Robbie Rogers and Eddie Gaven but I don't think they're going to improve enough. Some good young guys like Luis Gil (maybe too young), Michael Stephens (huge fan), and Brek Shea (HUGE fan and he's versatile enough to play forward). And hey, there's always Freddy Adu!

Overall: I think we're in good shape here as far as "solid" players go, but I would love to have one or two break out as stars.

Forwards: Jozy is the only sure bet. Robbie Findley MAYBE gets one more look, but I wouldn't bet on it. Edson and Herculez, thanks for your service but that will be all.

On the horizon: Assuming that Charlie keeps getting better at the rate he has been he will definitely be around as well. It's just so hard to project out after a horrific injury like that. I'm hopeful though. Eddie Johnson would have to pull off a miracle to get back in. Conor Casey is donezo. Marcus Tracy (assuming he stays healthy), mark it down. A couple crazy idea: Zack Schilawski - the rookie has come out bombing with 5 goals in 12 games for a terrible NE team. Intriguing. Jack McInerney - only 17 but actually getting time with Philly. Semi-intriguing. Juan Agudelo - another young guy who was one of the crown jewel in NYRB Academy's crown (with Matt Kassel and Johnny Exantus).

Overall: There is potential here, but only Charlie has really proved himself at a high level of club play and he's a huge question mark. I think we all agree that Jozy has every talent you could ask for to be great though, so we'll have to see if he puts it together.

Defense: Jones is an intriguing idea. Agree with a lot of your names. I'll throw Tim Ream in the hat as well. I don't know if you've had a chance to watch him, but I've watched him plenty and the kid's a stud. Obv it's hard to project but there's at least a possibility he becomes an option at CB if he develops the right way.

Midfield: Agreed, we have a very bright future in midfield imo. I think there's a good chance Stu Holden is going to turn into a legitimate star. He's already at Bolton and they love him there apparently so that's a great start. The kid's legit for sure.

Bradley is the future of the USMNT, I don't think there's any doubt about that.

I'd love to see Torres get to La Liga or somewhere. I think he's another one with big star potential, particularly if he gets a little more steel.

Agreed about Edu, Landy, Deuce, Benny etc. being solid options. I hope Bedoya becomes a stud, big potential.

Forwards: It cracks me up that you talk about the "crown jewel's of the NYRB academy" as prospects like that. I've played with and against a bunch of those guys, including Matt Kassel more times than I can count. Frankly, I find it hard to believe Kassel could ever make it. I mean, he's a sick player without a doubt, but he just can't be international quality I don't think. MLS maybe, USMNT no imo.

Agreed about Marcus Tracy. Just a ridiculously sick athlete. He's another one that I've met and hung out with, and I'd like to see him do well. He's an absolute monster in the air, unbelievable jumping ability and great timing. I'm drooling thinking about Stu Holden playing set pieces and him rising over everyone and heading them home.

What ever happened to Jose Angulo? He was another one of those future prodigies and last I heard he was headed overseas...anyone know where he ended up?

I hope Charlie can ever get back to the level he once was at.

Jozy has ridiculous potential and is still so young. He should be a starting striker for at least the next two cycles as long as he develops and improves like he should. Since we're only ever going to play with either one or two out and out strikers, I'm pretty comfortable at this spot going forward.

Also, let's call in Andy Najar ASAP amirite?

And yes, I am a gigantic Brek Shea fanboy but the kid is ballin' and left-footed.

I was one of the few that thought and still do think that Kljestan has potential. I don't think it's fair to completely discount him. Kid is obviously still skilled. He's still just 24. I understand players don't typically develop technically much at his age but I think he has a lot to learn tactically and if he can get that at Anderlecht and beyond and improve his mental game he has a chance to be a solid reserve/spot starter for the national team throughout the next cycle. When the guy is comfortable he looks a lot like JFT does when he was comfortable in that second half against Turkey.

I don't think he's great or anything, I've just seen him look pretty damn good controlling games at Chivas USA and don't think it's fair to write him completely off yet.

Just a couple thoughs:

I think putting JJ in any 2014 lineup is unrealistic. He'll be 36 at that point, I sincerely hope we'll have better options.

Donovan and Dempsey should certainly still make the squad. What role they'll play is debatable, but I can't see them being left out barring a ridiculous wave of talent.

If things go the way we hope, the squad will be built around Bradley and Altidore, both of whom have blossomed into big stars. Hopefully. To parrot everyone else, Jozy is only 20 (21?) and has every chance to become something special. Bradley is awesome and could also become a special player.

In the slightly-less-hopeful-but-still-hopeful category, I put Charlie Davies and Freddy Adu. Adu's still only 21 and could still turn into a useful creative force. We certainly don't have anyone with his skill set right now, and it's not unreasonable to hope by age 25 he'll be significantly improved from 21. Charlie Davies is only a year older than Jozy but the injury makes any sort of prediction about his future a little pointless right now. We just have to wait and see.

Other than that, I don't know too much about the prospects we have coming up, so reading about those guys is fun.

Finally waking from this post World Cup exit hangover and kind of grunching but: Bedoya is going to be a stud for us in 4 years. He has very good vision for a winger / wide midfielder, and has some pace and quality technique. Really think he makes a move to a bigger club in the next few years. He seems to be able to play with both feet and could be the perfect complement to Holden on the other side. I think Bedoya has a higher ceiling and upside whereas Holden is definitely the safer bet to pan out as a USMNT squad player.

Also really think Bradley is poised for a move to an EPL squad which would be great for his development. Often times I forget how young he is.

I think most importantly is that we make a move for an International level coach, one who excels in tactics. Bob did a great job for us (Confed Cup, the first 3 games of this WC, various friendlies) but I think we need a proven guy at the next level. I think at times we are too tactically rigid, and focus too much on our own style - I would like to see more opponent-based tactics (coincidentally, Wenger is also accused of doing this too much). Not sure who that is, but I'm supposing a Gus Hiddink is a prayer?

I can see where Gulati is coming from. The defensive miscues we made, (hey, lets just "forget" to mark someone ever 15 minutes and leave space right up the middle of the field!) were inexcusable. I'm not sure how much of that is on BB, how much is on the players, whether a fully healthy Onyewu would have made a difference, it is for the USMNT insiders to decide how much of that is on BB.

I have no idea, but is Klinsmann actually a top tier coach and for sure the best choice? I don't want to end up us signing an average coach just because he was a star player and then coached a stacked German team to the semis in a WC they hosted.

hiddink is w/ turkey for at least the next year.

and judging by what he's said for turkey, he'll be there at least through euro 2012.

There's a general soccer/football thread which will get unlocked once WC is over. The US gets its own thread because of the predominance of US-based posters on this site.
