Juventus will surprise. Allegri will hopefully show that hiring him wasn't a mistake

Have a soft spot for Kobenhaven (saw a game there when I lived in Sweden + Carlsberg kits) and Lille (got their kit before I had a bunch of kits for like $10 when Canterbury went out of football business or whatever). Would love to see them go through and would like for Zenit to **** right out of the tournament.

Besiktas looked ok, although Ba had no chemistry with anyone so doubt he starts (only came on for last 30 or so)

Ive decided to try to get into Euro football this year so I'm gonna watch as much Champions league as I can and am therefore looking for teams to randomly watch and root for so I have an emotional sweat. So far I've decided on Sparta Prague (because that guy scored 5 goals in their first game) and Celtic (not sure why). Are there good reasons why I shouldnt root for these teams, and are there any other teams still in it that have compelling underdog/backstory reasons that someone with literally zero attachment should be aware of?

I'm aware of the format and that both of these teams are very unlikely to make deep runs.

for a neutral fan, you arent aligned to any region/league

I would just pick the best matchups in each respected league for that week and watch thise games, eventually you ll grow fond a of a teram any by seasons end you ll be a fan of that team. Shop around and watch the best Serie A, La Liogue, EPL and Bundesliga games

Yeah just watch Matches and you'll end up liking one team. To Quote the great Nick Hornby:

"Few of us have chosen our Clubs, they have just been Presented to us; and so As they Slip from the Second division to the third, or sell their Best Players, or buy players who you Know can't play, or bash the Ball for the Seven hundreth time towards a Nine-foot Centre-forward, we simply curse, go home, worry a fortnight and then come back to suffer all over again."

I'm fairly sure you'll see yourself drawn to Schalke matches, though

Dortmund is entertaining and are an underdog of sorts since we have quite a lot less money than the top tier spenders and get our best players poached by our local rival (Bayern aka the Yankees of German football).
Entertaining playstyle, aggro/fun to watch coach. Great stadium/fans.

Bonus: Our home kits are anarchocapitalist yellow/black :P

[Celtic obviously a great pick as well]

Yeah I decided to take the advice and just try to watch as many games as I can and see what happens (in addition to the two teams I mentioned). Also I figured gambling makes anything more interesting so I did a team draft from third round on with some friends who also dont know much about Euro football, and created an arbitrary scoring system similar to NCAA bracket. Biggest disconnect for me is I really enjoyed watching the German national team, so I expect to enjoy the German CL teams but then like half the guys arent even on Bundesliga teams. Very counterintuitive for naive American

Watch Bayern. All the good German NT guys play for us. Except for Kroos, I guess, who used to play for us last season.

Watch Dortmund, most German NT players

Seriously though, watch a bunch of games. Any gambling/FF type thing also helps. Not sure if there's a good CL manager game but I'd like to see some well done incentive like fantasy football for the CL group stage+

Simulcasting (if available, kind of like Redzone for soccer) through a bunch of CL group gamedays is probably the way to go to get oriented.

Yeah I will plan to follow gameday threads as well, if anything like the NFL gameday threads they add a ton to the experience.
