tried to start that show once, got about halfway through S1 before i was thrown off by the datedness / cheesiness of it. should i power through that and try again at some point?

Yeah, definitely. Honestly, the first half of S1 is the weakest part of the show. As it starts to pick up steam in the second half, you'll get hooked. Stick with it; trust me.

It's in some ways a three-act play that takes place over seven seasons, which is major reason the whole series needs to be seen to appreciate it. It's also a reason I thought the rules of this draft favored the selection-- I wouldn't have made this pick if the rule was that a season would be watched in isolation.

No.2 was expected. No.1 not so much. Never made it past season 3 of the Shield so can't really comment on that particular season. Makes me wonder if i gave up on it too soon.

Anyway, The Wire S4 is a great pick for the same reasons I picked The Shield, in that it is greatly enhanced by the requirement that the judges must watch all the preceding seasons first.

I mean, it depends what you have/haven't seen, right? You can't go wrong with The Shield, but it is seven seasons long.
