Xavi is a top 5 player in the world (imo). I know stats aren't everything, they play different positions and roles, and Xavi is older than Messi but:

Over all competitions

Xavi:

08/09 - 16 G, 34 A
09/10 - 6 G, 19 A
10/11 - 5 G, 14 A
11/12 - 10 G, 9 A

Messi:

08/09 - 42 G, 18 A
09/10 - 49 G, 11 A
10/11 - 51 G, 22 A
11/12 - 33 G, 17 A

Messi > Xavi, but Barca probably does not win all those titles without both of them
Paging SirGaribaldi.

Maradonna did it.
Zidane did it.

How dare he decide to be born in Belfast, what an idiot.

This is a weak argument for GOAT determination, especially in this sport.

Anyone who watches a Barca with Messi on the field will recognize that he is the straw that stirs the drink.

It was a different sport in the 20's, that's just hyperbolic. No one makes those comparisons.

Calling that French team mediocre is pretty incredible.

Thuram, Desailly, Blanc, Vieira, Petit, Djorkaeff

Really mediocre cast of characters there.

Yeah, I mean unless it's a case of being so, so, so far ahead of everyone else that it's impossible to ignore (like Don Bradman in cricket), this should usually be accepted as correct.

it was a different sport in the 50s too. and the 70s. hell, when i played soccer, the goalie could still handle a pass back.

being slightly better than the best competition of all time is just as impressive as dominating less evolved eras.

And yet when I made this argument in favour of George Mikan in the "greatest bigmen of all time" thread, I was chastized rather heartily for it.

Xavi seems like he deserves to win it at some point in his career, but the problem is if you are being honest, he's never going to win it over Messi in a vote for who the actual best player of the year is.

The only reason why Messi wouldn't dominate the Premier League is that some English idiot would give him a season ending injury a few games in because of frustration over getting owned so hard.

the BPL physicality argument is just latently homosexual CR9 fanboys grasping at straws, david silva illustrates perfectly that it is nonsense.
