It depends on your perspective. Another way to look at it is that Tiger won 3 tournaments at age 36 and 5 at age 37. Those two stats do suggest that he'll age better than most golfers.

that's b/c he's an historic talent though. when he's healthy he's still great, but a huge part of why people decline is injuries and Tiger is a massive injury risk going forward

with an average aging curve Tiger may have already hit 18 - if you're thinking he may age in a graceful manner I think you're ignoring he has already started to age much more poorly than an average golfer.

He'd likely have more than 5/42 if there was no Tiger.

And yes, people do talk about Phil as an all-time great. He's got 5 majors and 10 T2s or better. He's considered one of the best short games ever and he's going over 20 years strong on the Tour in the toughest era in golf history.

I think when you adjust for era (the fact that he was stuck with Tiger's era and also the most recent era to boot) he's arguably Top 10 all-time.

Weirdly, he spent so long stuck on 0 majors that a lot of people might not realize he even has 5 or what a high number 5 actually is.

Phil is easily top 10 all time. I didn't know anyone thought otherwise. Seems obviously in the 6-8 range.

Yeah. Phil is going to go down as the most underrated golfer of all time, which is saying something since many people already think highly of him.

The general impression I get of what the "avg sports fan" thinks of him him is that he's "well-liked" or the "anti" Tiger, not that he's the 2nd best golfer since the Nicklaus era (arguably--Watson and Vijay had higher peaks, but Phil has a longer peak, so it depends on how you weigh peak vs career).

Yeah gus I think your radar is a bit off then. "Some people" sure, but I read your comment to mean pretty much [all] people, which is clearly wrong.

There are loons who will put the old Scots from the 1900s like Willie Park VIII, Esq. ahead of him because "he did it first!" or whatever lore makes them biased but yeah Phil has got to be way up there. Dudes been on Tour what like 22 years and he's either won or finished T2 at each of the 4 unique majors since 2013!!! That is damn impressive.

His (impressive) win at The Open vaulted him a relatively significant amount in many eyes, imo.

What does the all time top-ten list look like?

Jack
Tiger
Arnie
Hogan
Watson
Trevino
Player
Seve
Phil
Nelson

Nelson is political because the nits would rage if hes not immortalized. Ideally i would throw a dude like bernhard langer or vijay. Langer is just a monster who has been around forever, vijay had a god tier peak. Head to head i think langer beats vijay.

I wish we could put every golfer at age 32, and pick a course for a 4 round battle royale. Top 50 golfers of all time get invited.

Winner take all, for best ever.

We would give these golfers a full month to prepare for the tournament. Play a practice round as often as you'd like.

It should be held at a course never used before. A course specifically designed just to hold this one tournament, so no one goes into the tournament with an edge.

If you guys want to make a list of the top 50, I'll run a simulation of the all-time tour any to decide the true GOAT.

I predict Phil blows up on Thursday or is right near the top of the leaderboard. His math and science foundation has helped him to realize that that in a winner take all format for GOAT title, risks lay off.

Holy **** I cannot wait for this tournament to get underway.

The funnest part of this tournament won't be reviving golds legends, and taking them back to age 32, but projecting guys like Spieth, Rory, Rickie, at age 32 (not saying Rickie is making this field, just an example)

I'm thinking of taking the top 30 on the major championships list... The top 10 in pga tour victories list that didn't make list #1, then the 10 best from today's game. Making the list right now, and thinking about course location and design. This might be the greatest par-taking in all of sport.

Ok, I have my list of 50 golfers that will be competing in the Golf tournament to end all Golf tournaments. The Main Event of Main Events, if you will. I followed some basic lists, then sprinkled in a few players who might not normally make the list, but I feel in this format are threats to win it all.

01. Jack Nicklaus
02. Tiger Woods
03. Walter Hagen
04. Ben Hogan
05. Gary Player
06. Tom Watson
07. Gene Sarazen
08. Arnold Palmer
09. Sam Snead
10. Bobby Jones
11. Lee Travino
12. Nick Faldo
13. Phil Mickelson
14. Byron Nelson
15. Seve Ballesteros
16. James Braid
17. Harry Vardon
18. John Taylor
19. Peter Tomson
20. Raymond Floyd
21. Ernie Els
22. Jim Barnes
23. Rory McIlroy
24. Vijay Singh
25. Billy Casper
26. Hale Irwin
27. Cary Middelcoff
28. Lloyd Mangrum
29. Ratief Goosen
30. Johnny Miller
31. Davis Love III
32. Greg Norman
33. Ben Crenshaw
34. Tom Kite
35. Nick Price
36. Curtis Strange
37. Payne Stewart
38. Fred Couples
39. David Duval
40. Jordan Spieth
41. Bubba Watson
42. Dustin Johnson
43. Jim Furyk
44. Hideki Matsuyama
45. Padraig Harrington
46. Angel Cabrera
47. Justin Rose
48. Adam Scott
49. Rickie Fowler
50. John Daly

Is anyone sees any glaring omissions, or players that they don't think deserve to make the field, speak now, as the field will be set in stone by tonight.

This will be an 8,000 yard course, featuring a 702yd par 5.

It will feature a 118yd, island par 3, where making 1, or making 7 is in play for all.
