That is very true. Every time he hits a simple recovery to 6 ft people go nuts. But stuff comes to mind like his Masters chip-in, or that hook from the bunker of the wrong hole around trees to the green in the '08 US Open (inside rocco's ball even iirc)...off that bum knee. That stuff is insanity.

I think something like 263 different players or so were referred to as the GOAT at some point or another in NFL game threads last year. I'm pretty sure it has less to do with people actually thinking Tiger is the only golfer ever capable of hitting that shot and more to do with just being excited in real time and having some fun on the forum.

Who said this was confined to the forum?

Don't you watch it on TV? How many replays do we have to watch of the shot?

I'm always amazed how knee jerk (get it knee jerk) all of these reactions are. Jack basically was not a threat to win a PGA tour event after 1978. He won only five more times, three of them were majors.

Tiger may never be able to dominate the tour or stay healthy for a whole year again. But if he can get himself on form four times in the next 15 years he can break Jack's record.

Oh, well I would think that's kind of standard since Tiger brings in the ratings. Casual fan loves him some Tigahhhhh.

Lets see him win one tournament again first.

Though Tiger has made up some ground on Jack's number of 2nd place finishes in majors over the last few years, so he's got that going for him.
Right, like I said - if we're measuring GOAT status by 18 majors, Tiger may or may not get there and Jack would still be considered the GOAT. However, if we apply simple logic that Tiger has played and dominated in a day in age where competition was much tougher than what Jack had to deal with it gets harder to discredit what he's done in comparison.

This is pretty much spot-on. His ball-striking really has not been very good post-'08 injury and his putter isn't there to bail him out anymore. Just look at what happened on the back 9 at Augusta this past year - he was red hot on the front side before reverting right back to the yips.

But if he doesn't win until he binks a major two years from now does everyone hop on his bandwagon again?

Rory will win every major for the next two years. Better shot maker.

it stands to reason that rising above all this is much harder for any one person to do than it used to be. so while it might look like there are fewer studs, anybody who is winning money consistency is a stud on a level with most of the older guys.

that doesn't mean Padraig = Jack but he probably gets underrated historically
This. It's easier to be a "stud" when the fields are weaker. The mini-tours are loaded with players who dominated junior golf.

I meant, if it is unlikely he passes Jack--as in, a small %--then it is even more unlikely he passes 20 and that remaining at 14 could be the most likely group, or 15 in that he still is a good player and ought eek out a win sometime. Depends how much worse he is a year from now obv. Could be a lock to remain at 14. May have a punchers chance at 15 let's say. Each win would be exponentially more difficult if he has greatly declined though, right? Er, not from 16 to 17 but from 15 to 17 for instance. Not sure if I'm making sense.

Every time he has gone through a swing change he has struggled, then figured everything out and won a string of majors. Obv this goes way deeper than a swing change, but if he figures his game out enough to win one major, he may very well win 3-4 more after that too.
