That's funny 'cause it was built like Daniel Snyder's Redskins.

What's amusing to me is that SB Nation pretty much out Grantlands Grantland without any of the stated intention. They just have great writers like Spencer Hall, Jon Bois, Jeff Sullivan, etc who work in long form meta analysis and what not into their regular work. You could basically cherry pick a bunch of stuff off SBN and present it as its own frou-frou sports cite and own the dicks off of Simmons and his band of bigger, less talented names. (and they've got much, much, much better editors).

I generally like Barnwell but it's annoying how in his NFL preview he says for every team: _____ had a Pythagorean record of _____ last year. Plus, they were _____ in games decided by a touchdown or less.

The "x record in games decided by less than a touchdown" stat doesn't account for anything that the Pythagorean record doesn't, but he's acting like it adds something to the discussion.

Podcast today with Lombardi, I'm dying of laughter halfway while they describe the Titans as the best team nobody's talking about, days after footballoutsiders projected them as one of the worst teams in the league.

Yeah, their QB situation is awful and without Washburn as DL coach I don't expect their defense to be very good either

Chris Johnson might run for 3000 yards though

One second, people think Jonah Keri is good at doing things beyond parroting SABR things that were discovered 5 years ago?

The DFW directors cut could be more embarrassing than the best of the week feature.

Edit: Also a healthy lol to everyone who thinks Verlander > Bautista

It's not everybody who can self promote, offer both side of an argument, handjob the guest for 30 seconds and answer an unasked question all while asking a question on a podcast.

Not to start a massive derail, but it's interesting that in the same breath Posnanski argues against engaging in difficult analyses of abstract, potentially unquantifiable "leadership" traits because baseball has "plenty of mystery in it already" he states "the overwhelming record [of individual statistics] to draw from."

I understand that Posnanski thinks "leadership" isn't worth investigating because it's already reflected in statistics, but that's the same type of reasoning that led people for decades to think gold gloves unquestionably measured defensive acumen.

Grantland has added The Solid Verbal podcast apparently. If nothing else, they're going a good job of scouring the internet for things people already care about.

It's a not totally terrible college football podcast (because one of the guys- Ty IS terrible, brings all kinds of stupid mainstream media/radio schtick and lots of trite analysis about nonsense like "who cares more" and "does it bother you that it's A&M driving all these change because A&M isn't important enough" talk. The other guy, Dan is pretty good).

Slightly OT: But I just finished that mammoth of an article in the Atlantic on the state of college sports. Grantland should take a cue from this type of sports journalism. You don't need gimmicks or 100s of analogies. Just good research and editing can go a long way for a great read.

Simmons needs a fact checker. Two weeks of the NFL season, two columns with mistakes.

Last week he called the '07 Browns a team that made the playoffs even though they did not (although they finished 10-6)
This week he said the '10 Texans finished 8-8 (it was 6-10)

Chris Brown now writes for Grantland. No, not the girlfriend beater, the guy who writes at http://smartfootball.com, a pretty good Xs and Os type of football site.

His articles so far:

Simmons pretty annoying about baseball MVP and pitcher/position player. Guess it should be expected since it lends itself to prolonged BS bridging some mythical gap between the everyman fan and supersabernerd, but just repeating over and over again the observation that a position player plays more games is uninteresting. Obviously balance the every day contribution of a position player against the disproportionate impact a pitcher can have in each of his appearances.. if pitching was so much less valuable than hitting+fielding then pitchers like Verlander wouldn't have monster contracts

no he wasn't, his logic at the time was asinine. the red sox being in the midst of a historic collapse no one saw coming doesn't change that.
