I could absolutely care less that he blocked me. I just found it hilarious how when I pointed out how flawed one of his articles was at 3 am that he blocked me 12 hours later. The fact he took the time to go through EVERY one of his tweets is insane to me. Shows how insecure he is. A person with over 1 million followers on Twitter should be more thick skinned.

Re: Bill Simmons/Sports Guy Containment Thread

for full disclosure McNutty, which article were you referring to, and what was your comment?

also, odds Simmons might have an assistant or something that goes through and blocks twitter trolls for him? he must have a ton of action on there, and i can't imagine that he's sitting there reading/responding all day. but who knows?

It was an NFL power rankings column last season (Fall 2009). I don't remember exactly what I said but it was pointing out a complete contradiction with something he had said about Team X on the podcast a week earlier. No abusive language.

Good point about the assistant. That would make a lot of sense.

I'm glad you brought this up. When I was in college, we used to go to Papa Gino's for All You Can Eat Pasta night, which was fantastic. Anyway, right when we got there one night, I put $5 into the jukebox and just selected that same Rick Astley song over and over again so that it would play for the entire time we were there. The reactions from the diners were priceless. Every time the song ended, you could see people praying that it wouldn't start again, and then it would. I miss college.
i'm exaggerating here, but his is a dubious story, of the 'i knew a guy who' sort. this chat was right when rickrolling had become internet popular.

I remember some stand-up talking about doing that with "What's New Pussycat?" which IMO is a lot funnier.

Simmons seems like the kind of guy who would make something like that up too...ugh

Latest podcast knocked me out with boredom. I honestly remember nothing significant about it. He could have layed into Kobe but barely glossed over it. Not a strong start for gay podcasters.

Re: Bill Simmons/Sports Guy Containment Thread

1- The MEM/OKC prediction is just him saying saying "I think Memphis wins a close game but OKC is equally likely to win in a blowout" in bad shorthand. Not really dumb at all.

2- It doesn't take that much time to read or block a tweet. You annoy him, less than a second later you can't anymore, reading WAY too much into that.

how could those 2 things possibly be equally likely?

said a different way, try finding any bookie would have given you your choice of:

OKC -10 with even money
MEM even money to win outright

It's not like he's running some algorithm, he's just predicting what he thinks will happen. By invoking betting lines you're applying a standard to his prediction that he likely never did.

well he's not making a prediction, he's making 2 different predictions that are at odds with each other.

Regular fans do this every time though. Hell, I heard 3 Yankee fans say the Yankees were either going to blow out Boston Sunday night because they were pissed at management or they were going to get blown out because they were distracted.

These are the type of fans Simmons caters to- Joe 6-pack. So when Simmons says something like this, he's connecting to a regular fan looking for an easy read. He's not writing for hard-core sports enthusiasts or gamblers.

If you are reading BS to get a read on betting lines and capitalize on it, you deserve to lose whatever you bet.

I listened to it while I was taking a nap. Apparently some guy is gay and thinks people care.

Re: Bill Simmons/Sports Guy Containment Thread

saying stuff that basically equates to 'if they play like we know they can i reckon they will blow them out, but having said that, if they don't deliver i wouldn't be surprised if they lose a close one!' isn't too dumb. i'm sure we've all said something akin to that to our buddies while at a bar.

declaring a game 50/50 and then seeing minutes later vegas has it at 75/25 and saying anything other than 'lolz i was way off' is pretty dumb.

Re: Bill Simmons/Sports Guy Containment Thread

KB4Z,

"how could those 2 things possibly be equally likely?"

There is a 50% chance that OKC wins by 15+.
There is a 50% chance that Memphis wins.
There is a 0% chance that OKC wins by less than 15.

I dont think that those things are true, but I get the sense that people think there is some huge logic fail here when all he is saying is "OKC will never win a close game." Again, there is no way that is top quartile of dumbness for sports people.

Imagine a rec-league game was coming up between two teams, one of whom is 0-20 in the league and another of whom is 21-0. Lebron James is a good buddy of one of the guys on the bad team and has told him he will join the team for the game, provided he isnt busy. The game is in to be played June 2, so he will be busy if the Heat make the finals.

That "real life" example is not far off of a match for the statement simmons made.

Re: Bill Simmons/Sports Guy Containment Thread

In other news Chad Ford correctly guessed Cleveland's 2.8% lottery shot would hit. Simmons also suggested that he "had a feeling" because it was acquired from the Clippers and the anti-Clippers karma involved. Clearly thinking on another level.
