Yes, "Rolling average of number of MLB teams with a per-game run differential of greater than 1 or less than -1, by season (through June 19)" is well into self-satire territory. Just awful.

John McEnroe is in hot water for this exchange:

Quote:
Lulu Garcia-Navarro: We’re talking about male players but there is of course wonderful female players. Let’s talk about Serena Williams. You say she is the best female player in the world in the book.

McEnroe: Best female player ever — no question.

Garcia-Navarro: Some wouldn’t qualify it, some would say she’s the best player in the world. Why qualify it?

McEnroe: Oh! Uh, she’s not, you mean, the best player in the world, period?

Garcia-Navarro: Yeah, the best tennis player in the world. You know, why say female player?

McEnroe: Well because if she was in, if she played the men’s circuit she’d be like 700 in the world.
I just listened to a 20 minute segment on the radio with like 8 guests.

Is being the best athelete in the world about pitting men against women? By that metric women can never be best.

Shouldn't you look at exceptional performance and wins? It's not a battle of the sexes
Maybe if you mean "most accomplished tennis player" don't ask if she's "the best player in the world"?

Also, she's probably not the most accomplished tennis player. Federer has 18 majors and he's competed against 2 of the top ten greatest tennis players OAT.

Why is there this obsession with comparing female athletes to men?

Goes back to Bobby Riggs facing top female players despite being in his 50s and 60s.

Williams sisters also faced some guy ranked 1xxth, got wiped out, and the man said he played more like a top 500 player rather than top 200.

Right but instead of celebrating an awesome career, and how great of an athlete Serena is, people have to immediately ask, well can she beat men?

From the perspective of sports media, most of the talk is making news of nothing. A way to go back to the well when the world you're reporting on is quiet. When the boxing world is dead, people suddenly release their top 10 p4p list. Same with ESPN.

For everybody else, it's entertaining the same way Conor McGregor fighting Floyd Mayweather is entertaining. It's a spectacle. I sincerely doubt people think that people are going to use a battle of the sexes to determine which gender is better.

I wasn't referring to McEnroe. I've heard other people comparing her to men years ago. I'm glad he won't apologize either. He shouldn't.

There's for sure some sexism but I think when a person or team dominates thoroughly, people wonder how they'd do vs better competition. Like how Alabama would fare vs worst NFL team or Kentucky vs worst NBA team. For women athletes and teams, the better competition is men and so that's where it goes.

SUB, the actual story is pretty hilarious

Another event dubbed a "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open[34] between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. Venus and Serena Williams had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked outside the world's top 200, so Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both. Braasch was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centered around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple bottles of ice cold lager".[35][36] The matches took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park,[37] after Braasch had finished a round of golf and two beers. He first took on Serena and after leading 5–0, beat her 6–1. Venus then walked on court and again Braasch was victorious, this time winning 6–2.[38] Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance". He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun".[39] Braasch said the big difference was that men can chase down shots much easier, and that men put spin on the ball that the women can't handle. The Williams sisters adjusted their claim to beating men outside the top 350.
Ironic that Williams was making bold claims like that back then, and now basically telling Mac not to speculate on the subject.

Serena is a clown. She didn't even pay attention to the context of what was being said. This was an interview question, Mac didn't go out of his way to make this statement.
