Yeah, set up course at nominal cost, charge $100+ (?) to a few thousand participants, get people to volunteer for free, profit. That's why there's Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, Spartan Race, and probably some other copycats I'm not yet aware of.

At least you did Tough Mudder, which from my understanding is sufficiently more difficult than Warrior Dash. I signed up with some others for a "Spartan Race" in a few months although I have no clue where that falls on the difficulty scale.

One of my friends did this in Austin this weekend. What exactly does it entail?

It's basically a mud/hill/trail run of between 10-13 miles (depending on course) with 20 different obstacles of varying difficulty (swims, sloshing through mud pits under barbed wire, monkey bars over water, climbing over walls, etc). Tough but kinda fun and good motivation to at least do some form of regular exercise because without it you'd want to kill yourself out there.

Dean like never trolls far too nice and logical for it lol, if he's trying to debate someone about something it shouldn't be that big of a deal

I've heard of at least one that has like electrified wire obstacles?

There were two at each of the last two. One where you had to belly crawl through water with wires dangling about 8 inches above the water, then at the end you run through a mud pit with wires dangling all the way to your knees.

Not every wire is live, and some have low voltage. But I've been shocked pretty damn good a couple of times. Overall it's not nearly as bad as it sounds though. Each obstacle basically good for one medium and maybe 1-2 very mild shocks. I did get nailed on my thigh once where it was convulsing on the belly crawl though as it took me a while to get out of the water and the same wire nailed me a couple of times.

I don't understand why you wouldn't just run a 5/10k or something, just seems like a dumb gimmick

Running is super boring. This is a great combo of hills, trail running, varied terrain, etc. Plus obstacles are cool and fun. It's also way more of a full body workout - lots of upper body obstacles (my upper body is super weak so it's good motivation for me). Remember the TV show Superstars with all the athletes? Obstacles are fun.

I'd say that it's stuff white people and black men like but apparently black women, Asians and Latinos don't based on the demographics that race.

As long as you have a mohawk and/or tribal tats, I bet it's pretty inclusive

It is pretty awesome seeing these totally ripped cross-fit dudes gassed out when climbing a hill (many of these are on ski resorts in the summer, with sections of the course that just run up the ski runs), while I go on by. Makes me feel a hair less weak.

But it's pretty redic. They get like 10,000 per weekend for these, so obviously all sorts of people are there. At like $100 a pop it's a freaking license to print money at the moment.
