I'm enthusiastic about this election not out of some vision of an Obama-led utopia but because it means Republicans haven't won by: holding the government hostage for four years, running a racially tinged, reality-independent scare campaign, nominating pres/VP candidates who ran as a business expert and a policy wonk and yet refused to provide any plausible sketch of their budget.

I mean, there's a ton of stuff not to love about Obama, but his victory is still a relative victory for sanity imo. Supports gay marriage, supports a woman's right to choose, is willing to make sane cuts to defense spending, etc. I want a president who represents the reality-based community.

As for the sample size, it might shock you to realize that taking a small sample of a larger group can show a reasonable approximation of how that larger group will respond. Further, once you get past a certain number, you can actually extrapolate that data for a VERY large number. Statistics are cool that way.

Tonight was a mandate that said that 1950s America is dead for good. Legalized marijuana passed in multiple states. Gay marriage passed at least in Washington. And multiple Republicans lost Senate races due to ignorant and condescending attitudes towards women's rights.

The Republican Party is not dead. They are capable of having some good ideas. But as long as they run on social attitudes that are out of touch with > 70% of America, they will continue to be voted down, and in my opinion rightly so.

I actually don't think the first part of that is true. The "traditional America" (read: suburban white America) probably does, but America is much more diverse than that.

so its pretty cool we are finally slightly above 50% over a small sample of nebulous collection on one of the moast mundane drugs, but get back to me when our heroin laws resemble portugal and netherlands.

The biggest thing here is his school voucher fiasco. He's come up with a plan to give out state education money in the form of vouchers to approved private schools, except that it turns out they either did no work vetting these schools or are purposely dumping money to religious organizations, as many of these schools are tiny religious schools that don't conform to a reality-based education. So you have situations like a school with a total student body of 54 getting 80 vouchers. Or a school being run by a guy who is a self-proclaimed prophet and has a bunch of other registered nonprofits in his name in bad standing in the state of Louisiana. Schools whose science curriculums supposed dragons were real and humans and dinosaurs lived together. Or whose social studies programs taught that the KKK was a force for social justice. Or that advanced math is a tool of the devil. etc. (If you're really curious, one of my best friends is, among other things, a blogger who did a ton of research exposing this stuff. Anyway, you can start here).

There are other reasons I think he would not be a viable presidential candidate-- he's got enough Michele Bachmann in him that he would inevitably embarrass himself on the national stage, for starters-- but the voucher thing is the biggest one. He was supposed to be Romney's education surrogate, and yet his plan is a totally embarrassing ****up. Honestly, I think the reasons he'd fail as a presidential candidate are the same reasons he wasn't offered the VP slot.

Whether or not Americans hate "drugs" doesn't seem to matter when it comes to whether or not the federal government will go after marijuana in states that have legalized/decriminalized it.

And stop acting like sampling isn't indicative of the majority or that the link I gave is the only piece of evidence out there (Here's another, from last year).

Americans don't hate weed, and the idea that because they do, the government will go after legalized marijuana dispensaries is wrong.

Most Americans dislike legalized heroin use, but no one in this thread other than you has brought that up, so solid work on that front I guess.
