I just think there's a big line between "disingenuous argument on the internet in favor of pet cause" and "paid shill".

I mean the politics forum is in large part sustained by the former. People are dumb/weird/insane/want attention/like trolling. All of these seem so much more likely than astroturfing.

(I've probably only read like 2 posts from dude lifetime, the thread doesn't attract mod trouble, so I just roll my eyes and leave it alone)

To blatantly change the subject:

If you like the Kendrick Lamar album- plz explain why. I caved to the hype and now want my money back. It's not really bad, it's just (to me) really uninteresting and boring and I'm honestly interested to hear how it appeals to other folks.

Dear SE,

So in less than 6 months my wife is graduating from her Ph.D program and we will be moving out of Austin, TX. The list of potential jobs for her has been narrowed down to 10 choices.

Athens, GA
Columbus, OH
Seattle, WA
Madison, WI
Iowa City, Iowa
Urbana-Champaign, IL
Ann Arbor, MI
Gainesville, FL
Houston, TX
East Lansing, MI

Aside from Gainesville, FL, if you have ever lived in or spent significant time in one of those cities, some information would be awesome. Please tell me why it is awesome or sucks to live in one of those cities. Information about restaurants and food is especially appreciated, but any info is great.

Thanks!

Champaign is like 90 minutes from me and it has to be among the bottom of the choices of that list. Have only been to Houston and Columbus besides that. Houston far and away the best of those three.

She's going to be a professor. These are the top programs for her Ph.D. I know though, so many Big 10 schools.

athens would be good if she wants to get some experience at the community college level before moving to a university

It doesn't really suck necessarily it's just your basic midwest town with not a ton to do or very much around it. I mean it might be better than Iowa City or something [never been there] but I'd be shocked if anyone enjoyed it more than like Ann Arbor or Columbus even.

Yeah, that's how it seems on paper.

Thanks!

BIG city power rankings:

1. Northwestern (great part of Chicago, beautiful)
2. Ann Arbor (great college town)
3. Columbus (surprisingly progressive, strong economy)
4. Madison (beautiful, but so ****ing cold)
5. Iowa City (surprisingly nice, shocked me)
6. Bloomington (meh, but the rest suck)
7. Minneapolis (would be fine but holy **** it is so ****ing cold)
8. Lincoln (just your standard boring crappy city)
9. West Lafayette (see above, but close to decent places)
10. Champaign (holy **** this place sucks - middle of nowhere, bad weather, depressed economy)
11. East Lansing (see above but worse)
12. Pedoville (4 hours from anything - hard to imagine how the pedo ring developed here!)

Not acknowledging the recent adds, but obviously DC is great and NJ is AIDS.

With having lived in Ann Arbor for 4 years and visited others sparsely,

Ann Arbor (only top spot if you stay during the summer as well)
Seattle
Gainesville
Athens
Columbus
Madison
EL
Houston
Iowa
Champaign

Athens is great if you like hot girls, cheap drinks, football, and good weather. If I was married I would stay the **** away aside from 5-7 times a year for a weekend though. It's also 30 min too far to commute from Atlanta.

That said, the other cities aren't super promising. I think I'd go Houston despite never having been there.

Gets gray, dark, and depressing in the winter time, but the summers are amazing. Also, decent poker nearby.
