Shawshank is incredible.

The 'I want real' mentality just leads to the viewing of depressing (but admittedly incredible) documentaries that leave you feeling horrible about the world.

Fight Club, V for Vendetta, Boondock Saints, stuff like that. I'm still developing the theory but it has something to do with themes of individuality and freedom vs. perceived oppression. Often includes violence obv.

It's not Citizen Kane, but it's a GOATish movie. Tells a great story and does it incredibly well. The idea that it only explores "safe" territory to mean is meaningless. I watch a movie to be entertained, few have entertained me to the level Shawshank has.

Those movies are "cult classics" but are never ever regarded as being some of the best films ever. ****, The Room has internet people themes in that it is terrible and hilarious

No one is saying Shawshank is bad. Just that it doesn't deserve the #1 spot on imdb. There would be far far less talk about Shawshank possibly being overrated if it was like #14 or something.

Yeah, I'm referring mostly to internet popularity (like the imdb top 250 is my main metric).

Why the "internet" distinction? IMDB is just the general public rating films. The internet just happens to be the media which allows this to occur.

I don't think IMDB votes are remotely representative of the general public, but I haven't dug too deep into it.

Agree with Phildo. Shawshank is heavy with the cheese. I saw it when I was 15 and my idealistic self was so inspired by the magical negro and the unwavering righteousness of Mr. Dufresne.

As you get older you realize how cheesy it is. I'd say it's 50/50 that it's a top 100 movie OAT.

#1 on IMDB is such a joke. And yes, the internet (read: the people who live on the internet like us) is not representative of the general public. 100% of Americans having internet access does not mean the IMDB votes are indicative of the general public.

Every movie Kubrick made is better than Shawshank so that basically knocks it out of the top 10 right there.

Shawshank is idealistic nonsense that panders at a pretty low level. It's entertaining enough though.

If I knew I was dying tomorrow I'd certainly watch Sandlot over Shawshank.

I mean, I'm not going to seriously get upset because someone thinks Shawshank is the 8th best movie of all time or something. It's all subjective preference anyway. We can have a little fun in the debate but people will like whatever they like. I actually get a little rustled when people try to "over-quantify" art. Just enjoy it.

That said, some of the complains do make me laugh a little. Some people will find anything to try and complain about.
