If it doesn't list the cause of death in the obituary, it's usually suicide, drug overdose, or they haven't determined the cause of death yet.

I've had a few friends take their own lives either by drugs or suicide, and at all their memorials the parents made it more about suicide awareness or drug abuse counseling stuff which was heavy but effective.

In happier news, going to MIAMI for the weekend

Would never live there but it's one of my fave places to spend a few days. Unsure where it typically ranks in fack city standings

Yeah forgot to say sorry for your loss, also, Eddy. Losing friends young is the absolute WOAT. Lost a few friends over the years as well.

I actually think about my childhood friend who ODed every time a Fast and Furious movie comes out. We snuck into the first one together when we were 11 (bought tickets for Recess: The Movie iirc). Fast and Furious Was PG13

Miami is a great city if you got cash. Too far from Vegas though.

Direct flights to Guayaquil and La Paz daily? Yes please!

Vegas might be my fav place to spend a few days tbh. Probably ahead of Miami but prob lower than Maui. Think there's a pretty big drop off after those 3

JACO Costa Rica would be tops if death equity wasn't so high

Couldn't live in any of those places long term tho

Just spent a week in San Francisco. If that isnt at or near the top of your list you are doing it wrong imo.

Funny you mention SF

I've only been there once but it's the only place I've visited that I think I could handle long term other than NYC. I did have an amazing weekend there (long story but ended up partying with the 49ers watching the pats/giants super bowl). Still not on par with Hawaii vegas or Miami for me though.

Only issue is that it's so damn expensive. If I ever leave NYC I'll be in some secondary or tertiary city where I can take it easy and not sell my kidneys for a decent apartment.

Heading to SF/Napa in 2 months after my stoner adventures in Den/Aspen next week. Looking forward to seeing which I prefer.

I don't get the love for SF as a destination. It's a cool place and has a lot to offer, but for like a one week drop in it's really a weird love affair to have. Oh cool sushi and cocktails and it's 50 degrees out can't find that anywhere.

For me, I've found that there's a huge disparity between NYC/sf/Chicago/Boston and other "major" cities in terms of quality of urban amenities. Places like Minneapolis don't even feel like a city to me, they make me feel like I'm in Brooklyn or queens.

I always bump Chicago down bc it's too far away from other civilizations.

If you're a weather whore, SF is a reasonable top spot I think.

To me SF just has a palpable energy and positivity in the air which I'm sure is due to the immense wealth created in the area over the past couple decades. But the weather there is not even that great imo.

It's a way of telling LA people to go **** themselves, plus nice scenic views. Which is strange because I've always found LA people really, really nice.

Yeah SF is jerktown, CA.

I get what disko and Jonah are saying, that was kinda my point. But just saying that is more of a indicator to why I could live there, less to "gotta get there for a few days some time this year."

I think Boston and philly are insanely underrated bc of (never thought I'd say this) CULTURE

Def something to be said for a city where the people you meet there are actually from that city. That was one of the reasons why I hated D.C. So much. Everyone is from somewhere else and just stopping by for a couple years for school/biz/internship. Felt like a fake city pulled from a j crew magazine or somethin

I imagine that's what's places like Denver and Phoenix are going to turn into unfortunately

I spent like 11 total weeks in SF in 2015 and it's definitely a great place with a lot to be said for it. And that's from an LA person. The area by Giants stadium is sick, the food is great, there's a lot to do, the local geography is stunning and pleasant, people are active, etc.

The downside I'd mention is the powerful social focus on success - it might be the most "I succeeded because I earned it, and if you haven't yet succeeded you are an inferior person because you just haven't committed to succeeding, man," place I've ever been in. I base this on personal experiences and on a 125-person jury panel's responses to various questions.

I'm not sure that's worse than LA's "if you're not beautiful or you can't do something for me directly then you are worthless" ethos, but it's also grating.

I could live there but it's not a top-5 for me. Based on outlandish expense alone it shouldn't be in anyone's top-10 unless it's a mandatory destination for a particular business/employment reason or something.

EDIT: Agree about D.C. I could not have been more ready to leave after 3 years. Everyone there is transient, it just captures interstitial moments in lives, and then everyone leaves. Weather sucks. Culture sucks. Being in the seat of government is amazing but it wears off - and that's before you factor in disillusionment with the institutions the city celebrates.

Also, the food in D.C. is TRASH (hot take).

And REMEMBER that LA is also not in my top-10 and I basically think this place has cool pockets surrounded by complete garbage. And traffic. Most Los Angeles-loathing Angeleno I know.

Totally unrelated:

I've recently gotten into BOULDERING. What a great workout and great sport. It's fun, it's healthy, you get jacked, and one of the people I met while climbing explained it to me as such: "In most sports, it's not even fun unless you're good. You can't even play until you're pretty good. In climbing, getting better is the sport." That's borne out by the people I've been meeting - the people who are really good freely help out people just learning and it gets paid forward.

Really recommend giving it a try. It feels really good to figure out a problem and learn a new method of controlling your body and maximizing your strength. Loving it.
