Classic,
I don't dislike O Brother, but in terms of fun, wacky Coen Bros period pieces I prefer The Hudsucker Proxy and I have no idea how someone could honestly think it is the goat comedy of the decade.

For some reason Hudsucker Proxy gets marginalized or forgotten. It's a fantastic film and I like it better than anything they've done since Lebowski including NCFOM.

This discussion makes me want to dig up the post by private joker where he claimed that Lebowski was the worst Coen Brothers film. Or his least favorite. Something ******ed anyway. If he's smart he had someone delete it for him.

the reason why the hudsucker proxy is marginalized is because it's not very good. i mean, it's kind of amazing how inventive the coens are, but the movie really has no heart. i enjoyed it until 2/3rds of the way through i realized i didn't care about any of the characters at all, then just waited until it would finally end.

Well you were overdue to be wrong about something, and here it is.

I have been fully on the Hudsucker Proxy bandwagon for some time. In fact, it's such a small bandwagon I might be riding shotgun.

Disagreeing with PJ on movies is a badge of honor IMO.

he flipped his [censored] with all my disputations in the hollywood thread. that said, he is prone to extreme hyperbole (just remember his excitement about the go team's drum fill).

also tuq i believe his name is pri.vate j.oker. fyi.

Sometimes the wildcards are deliberately left off because I want someone to find the post when searching their name. This is one of those times. BTW it works particularly well with RedBean.

It's back around his OP where he posted his bottom of the list:

Quote:
6. Barton Fink
7. Intolerable Cruelty
8. The Ladykillers
9. O Brother Where Art Thou
10. Blood Simple
11. The Big Lebowski
Incidentally, Triumph responded to that with:

Quote:
The Big Lebowski #11?

Everyone stop hating, I'd rate the Big Lebowski #11 too...

...on a list of the greatest things Western Civilization has ever produced. I'd put mathematics around 4-5, the computer lower down, democracy'd be up there - and then The Big Lebowski.
Let's have a look at some other gems in that thread. suzzler:

Fargo is the only Coen Bros movie I've really liked.

The Big Lebowski started off good, but just went sprawling and was never able to come together at the end. The screenplay is seriously flawed.

who gives a f about lebowski, it wasn't that funny. the more important question is, where's the love for blood simple? it's merely one of the best american crime films of the past 25 years.
By contrast, this person NoSetNoBet nails it:

Quote:
Seriously, it's one thing to not love the Big Lebowski and put it in the top 10 comedies of all time. But to not rank it even in the top 10 Coen brothers of all time and to make a serious case for the Ladykillers being a better movie, that goes beyond ridiculous. It doesn't make you cool and intellectual, it just makes you lame and pretentious.

i agree. it's better than ladykillers and burn after reading but it's pretty lame for a coen brothers film.

Oh wow I spaced out Burn After Reading. Definitely prefer that over HP and it's probably tied with Raising Arizona for my 3rd spot.

Phildo, are you suggesting Burn After Reading is one of the two worst Coen Brothers films? That's definitely not private joker bad but it's pretty bad.

Burn After Reading was awful outside of Brad Pitt and JK Simmons' characters.

Malkovich and Clooney were both awesome. McDormand played perfectly the anxiety of a middle-aged woman.

Thought it was spectacularly boring and didn't deliver but it could be one of those movies I simply didn't "get" so it's possible I'm just stupid and that's the problem.
