I think it's two things:
1) The school year ends next week, so the season doesn't interfere with people's vacation/camp plans. Nice clean break with school and baseball.
2) It's hot as **** in Georgia during the summer. It was close to 90 today already.
There is a casual summer league where coaches just invite kids to play and sometimes borrow kids from other teams. It's more for the players who aren't as good. There are also the all-star travel teams, even at this age.
Down here, we have fall baseball, too, which I'm told isn't as intense as spring ball (this league is pretty intense). My son said he might want to do that because he is enjoying baseball and it's his last chance to get more game time in before he moves up to kid-pitch.
