For example nowadays during NFL season on sundays everyone and their uncle are armchair-offensive coordinators and whatnot; I don't think the average casual fan was as educated on/aware of some of the finer points of their sport(s) maybe 10-15+ years ago.
I mean, I get his argument that the presentation to American fans isn't the same as the NFL/NBA broadcasts, but I still don't think that matters. Soccer isn't the same as basketball or football, it's pacing is different. Hell even it's timing is drastically different than anything available in major American sports.
I think it's overly simplistic to say "Soccer is really complex, Americans don't get that, so they don't like it". I know what those players do is tough, I realize it's the same as elite-level play in any other sport. I just don't care
It's a really different game than Football/Basketball/Baseball, and some people just don't like it.
