I looked at his wikipedia page a few days ago and was shocked that he's only 33. I guess I didn't realize that he was so young when he first signed at Barcelona. He was really good there. I don't remember if he left on a bad note or what happened but he may have been caught in the crossfire since the club was in a lot of turmoil at the start of the century. They got Nuñez out as president and then Gaspart was hated even more. Louis van Gaal was incredibly bad with the media and was hated as well. They basically had no Catalan identity on the roster; most of their regulars were Dutch. They actually forfeited the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal in 2000 because it was a couple days after the Netherlands played. They couldn't play something like 10 players I think because of some rule that required days off or something. According to them, because of the Dutch national team they couldn't field a full team of 11 players. I'm sure it didn't hurt that they lost the first leg 3-0 against Atletico de Madrid. On top of all that I'm sure it didn't help that Figo was sold to Real Madrid who won the Champions League twice around that time.
Naturally I went on a tangent there. The point of all of that was supposed to be that given the atmosphere at the club it's likely he would have been pushed out the door for reasons other than not being good anymore. So WTF happened to him after he left? Rivaldo is pretty similar. They both went from being superstars at Barcelona to not being able to get first-team football in a top league in less than a year.
Injury's mainly. He hasn't been healthy since then
