Re: Random soccer/football discussion thread
I'm pretty sure there are some Celtic fans around here so:
What's your opinion on Glenn Loovens?
He got selected for Holland's national squad..

So which soccer leagues run during the summer months that I could follow? Do they have DirecTv packages with these leagues? Not sure if I'm going to get into it for sure, but I'm considering it for the summer of 2010.

I thought EPL was on Espn? Start with that and you'll be fine

Thats the point, chelsea and everyone involved knows he cant pay that amount so he will be forced to retire, that just seems wrong.

Assani, there are only a handful of leagues around the world that play during the summer, MLS being one of them. The others are primarily Scandinavian and Russia leagues, mostly due to the harsh weather of the winter.
Most of the big European leagues start in late August, so obviously you have something to tie you over until the NFL starts. Plus the leagues run until may.
While there is 2.5 months were no games occur, there is a stupid amount of talk just relating to the summer transfer period where teams try to sign players.
Hope that helps.

When does EPL run, in late August as TSC alluded to? Is EPL considered the best league in the world?

Re: Random soccer/football discussion thread
English Premier League + Spanish Primera Division are considered the best leagues, followed by the Italian Serie A and German Bundesliga.
The world cup is in may-june(?) 2010and will definitely be worth watching.

Different answers how? Hopefully better news I assume?
Right now the EPL is being considered the best in the world, with La Liga (Spain) a close second.
The EPL runs from mid to late August to mid to late May IIRC. La Liga runs about two weeks behind the EPL.
Germany has a similar schedule as the EPL but they take a few weeks off during the winter due to weather.
To add, as others have said, the summer is best known for the international tourneys, especially the Euro's and the World Cup. Both occur every four years. Euro's were in 2008, WC in 2010, etc.

Re: Random soccer/football discussion thread
Epic TRs
Stadia in Spain seem to be quite a bit steeper than those in the US in my limited experience. Seem more so than those in England as well, but I'm far less sure about that especially now that some of the bigger ones are new.
I saw a fantastic 0-0 draw (it actually was a great match, I'm not being sarcastic) between Real Madrid and Manchester United in the Bernabeu in 2000 and had very similar thoughts to yours. Ramon-Sanchez Pizjuan in Sevilla is pretty steep as well, but not as much as the Bernabeu and more importantly it's not nearly as big so it's a lot less dramatic.
Something that is pretty LOL that I'll admit to is that I didn't realize before I went that they play the Champions League anthem (THESE ARE THE CHAMPIONS) at the stadium. That plus the center-circle cover that they shake and the huge crowd noise gave me the chills and thoughts a ten-year old would have like "HOLY **** I'M REALLY AT A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GAME".

heh, I get like that when I go to MLB, NFL, or NBA playoff games as well.
I think its just the excitement of being at a big game, it brings out the inner kid in you.
