The Olympic men's soccer tournament permits each team to bring three overage players. Don't be surprised if you see Landycakes, Gooch, and/or T. Howard playing in Beijing.

Much more annoying then calling Football Soccer is Pluralizing Offside to make Offsides. I think its annoying when Americans use new terminology because we all know how many of you there are and that if you became really interested in football you would reinvent all the jargon in your own image and it would quickly become offsides, road games and PKs

AJW,

A lot of Americans also get really annoyed with offsides. It's especially brutal when it's one of the commentators or other people who make a living talking about it. The weird thing about offsides is that in every sport it's actually offside but easily the majority of people say offsides. Offsides doesn't even makes sense since you have to be on one side or the other.

I prefer flopping to diving because its more insulting. Diving sounds like an olympic sport with skill. Flopping implies you are out there helplessly flailing like a fish out of water. More appropriately describes just distasteful it is.
Help. Still need correct answers kplsthx.

Used to but they changed the rules. No overagers in Beijing.

Correct answers to what exactly?

Also lol @ diving being called 'flopping' I had never heard that before and it is hilarious.

people in the US call it flopping because they think it is similar to flopping in basketball. Flopping in basketball is overexaggerating contact, either on offense of defense. The most prevalent purveyor of flopping was Vlade Divac, usually against Shaq. Shaq would back down Vlade, and Vlade would flail to the ground, his back flopping against the floor. Thus flopping was born. Vlade also earned the nicknam "Floppy" Divac.

The purpose of flopping is obviously to draw a foul. Flopping is also generally associated with foreign players, even though American players do it as well.

So most American fans equate simulation and exaggerating contact with flopping, not diving.

SO if you see someone obviously cheating in that manner, we might say "What an obvious dive" or whatever, do you guys say "What an obvious flop"? lol.....

Bill Laimbeer and Karl Malone both flopped a lot before Divac made it his.

I'm sure several guys before them as well.

I understand its different cultures using different words to say the same thing, but why in the world is it so "lol" to you?

Also, I try and use the correct terms around you sticklers, but what is wrong with saying PK? Its a Penalty Kick right?

road game = away match

bad call : there are many ways to say that the ref/manager/player sucks tbh.

You could see it in the NBA threads, but yeah, something like "what an acting job", "where's the sniper", or "I can't believe they let him get away with flopping like that".

I can definitely say that diving is the single biggest turnoff for American fans when they get into the game.

if aldershot make the right transfers in the summer we're more than capable of staying up, and even to get a mid-table spot. We've got some genuine quality in midfield.

Shots shopping list: support striker, right back, goalie if nikki bull leaves, centre halves

btw. anyone going to the brentford match tomorrow??

it was very funny just after gillett nd hicks bought the red mickeys. They were asked the usual questions, and one of them said, "we just to need to get some more points on the road." I lol'd hard at that.

If we`re saying flopping = diving, its associated with foreign players in the epl too even though English players do it (but not) as well.

No, not necessarily. If an American basketball player flops, than it is described in the same fashion as a foreign player flopping. The reason international players are brought up is because a bunch of foreign players are most well known for doing this.

Quite a few teams seem to go up and then up again. Hereford look likely to do it this season but theres been loads.

I think better than mid table Ledders

George best is not generally considered a "foreigner" - nor are any players from Britain.

I think calling a 'game' a 'match' is about the same as calling an 'away match' a 'road game', or calling a 'penalty kick' a 'PK', or calling 'diving' 'floping' or even calling 'football' 'soccer'.

I see what you mean about the verb thing though.

I still think it is funny how bent out of shape soccer fans get about this.

Olympic soccer is U-23? That's ******ed.

(I think they should take soccer out of the olympics entirely BTW).

I dunno why I find the term 'flopping' so funny I can't help it. I guess its because everytime I try to use it in a sentence it just sounds ridiculous.

PK is just weird to us, I mean no one here ever says PK, do you say FK for a free kick? Or CK for a corner kick? Would it sound weird to you if someone did? Its just not part of the lexicon at all. We normally say 'a pen' or in Ireland sometimes a 'Peano', dunno if English people would say that though I know the Scottish generally don't.
