Ha, just got Thousand Autumns in hardcover. Read Black Swan Green awhile ago. It was good, but the title of this book seems a bit too derivative of Gabriel Garcia GOATquez.

My David Mitchell power rankings:

1. number9dream [A+]
2. Cloud Atlas (hated the movie)
3. Black Swan Green
4. Ghostwritten
5. TTAoJdZ [A-]

He has a new novel coming out later this year.

Best book I've read in the last year was re-read of Crime and Punishment. If ever there was a book that needed to be adapted to the screen well that is it. Hasn't happened yet, and not for lack of trying.

I really liked the movie, that's about as good as you can do with a book like that.

Cloud Atlas
9 Dream
Ghostwritten
Autumns
Swan

Merging with Disqus kinda ****ed the overall quality but there are still some pretty good commenters there, some really insightful discussions on the right shows/topics, etc. It's not as good as it used to be, but it's still way better than OOTV, or anywhere else I've found for TV discussion, really. Obviously I would refer to the True Detective discussions as my go-to example, but compare the comments on those articles to OOTV and tell me the difference is slight.

Define your terms. Specifically: form, perception.

And know that I'm talking about the mediums in their entirety.

Can every movie be described by a book?
Can every book be made into a movie?

If not, you agree with me. Now, you seem to be making exceptions for adaptations for reasons I don't quite understand. Yes, the "story" is the same. A story is not a novel is not a movie.

Ok, I'll hang in there for a few more episodes. To me, the mark of great TV is I forget I'm watching TV. With Hannibal, thus far anyway, I am reminded every minute I am watching TV. Whether it's from Fishburne's terrible acting or the annoying (and terribly unbelievable) Freddie Lounds angle, I am thinking "this is so fake/terribly scripted etc" quite often. This is usually (like 99%) the case with network TV thought so I dunno why Im surprised. Maybe that dude in here who thinks its the GOAT convinced me it would be good.

As for Vikings, like I said I gave it about four minutes before I shut it off. The one scene where the housewife takes out two grown rapists was enough lol's. I would have shut off Breaking Bad too, if Walt Jr. was squatting 500 lbs for reps in episode two.

Fair enough and I def know where you're coming from, but for me that's like potentially a rough standard on stuff where part of the appeal (or even part of the point) is how stylized it is. Hm I'm trying to think of recent examples, but first ones coming to mind are all movies like There Will Be Blood or Synecdoche NY or something, when half the times I'm saying to myself "oh man that's fantastic" aren't story/writing related but they're editing/directing/cinematography/blah blah. Part of Hannibal's deal is distorting things because of unreliable narrators/etc, so by nature it's wobblier to watch than say GoT where it's pretty natural just to relax and root for havoc and pelt and arya. I'm not as gushy about Hannibal as some but I do think season two has been terrific, and hey maybe I'm missing out on The Compleat Hannibal Experience because I'm not watching it with the lights off and headphones on while crammed into Joe Rogan's sensory deprivation tank like Chilltown.

I like a lot about Hannibal, especially (and obv) because of the Hannibal character. The music is great and some of the settings are amazing (Hannibal's office)...but:

Spoiler:
when a supposed murder suspect (Abigail Hobbs) is just like, chilling alone in a hospital and tabloid reporters, fbi agents(one who shot her father) and a random shrink can just waltz in and begin talking to her about her fathers death. this would never happen in any sane universe. It's just sloppy. Fishburne is useless. All three females on the show are just nauseating. it's just a lot to fight through to enjoy the good stuff, of which there is some for sure.

rewatching the got ep, the first 40 minutes blow by real quickly. the hound/arya are what makes it a special episode tho, such great lines and pretty good action

it was crazy how fast ep 1 was of GoT. and yeah the hound to arya about who names swords hahaha and the entire unforgiven bar scene...

after the buildup of non-stop action this season, it was kind of meh. there was basically no action at all until the hound/arya, which was mostly just him punching people to death. it did go by fast though, GoT is a perfect show to bingewatch. 50-55 min is just not enough with so many different plots in parallel.

There has been 1 (?) episode with "non-stop" action in the entire series.

Er, maybe 2.
