Great show. Really liked the last episode. The suspense I felt in the Carcosa scene was off the charts. I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting to jump.

A wild voice of objectivity appears!

Yeah, I tried to resist for long enough, and I'm not even going to try to defend the show against its critics-- there are plenty of people out there to do that that can fairly claim objectivity. But with regard to this specific part of the show: isn't that the point? In real life serial killers aren't Hannibal Lecter or Dexter Morgan; they're usually just deranged people who have twisted some combination of bad genetics, bad upbringing, and bad beliefs into some variation on a "kill all humans" practice.

I really loved the entire characterization of Errol. Mimicking Cary Grant, the compassion for the dog, the handyman front, the clutter, refuse, and stink of his jungley, dilapidated environs.

Serial killers are notoriously hard to peg. I just read about the guy who killed Kitty Genovese. He was 28, good job, wife and two kids. Lived a double-life as a serial rapist/murderer. After a few years in prison for the Genovese murder he shoved a tin can up his ass, got sent to medical, and somehow escaped. He was almost immediately picked up after promptly raping two more women after his escape.

I too fell in to the trap at times with this show of sometimes wanting specific resolutions.

However, in the end, wasn't this show all about the detectives? Pizzolatto even said in interviews he just wasn't that concerned with serial killers or that aspect of it. We learn that the person doing unspeakable things was just an unspeakably horrible person. And after the final conflict with the killer, the show wraps up focusing on the relationship and nature of the two detectives, which has always been at the heart of the show.

The problem with this is that that isn't actually the profile of all the people who are involved. The Tuttle family, the actual upstanding pillar of society types, are clearly involved (the videotape found in the safe, etc). Where the show fell down was that it didn't even attempt to explain the connection between that and some deranged fat moron in the swamps ****ing his sister and slaughtering people.

I still give the show an A+. The acting, direction, characterization, atmospherics, dialogue, etc etc are fantastic. I don't think it stuck the landing as well as it could.

Show obviously wasn't bad, was just a heat of the moment disappointed post. Great show, just felt underwhelmed by the finale. I expected a lot more than a completely formulaic "detectives find bad guy, gets hairy, get bad guy, walk into sunset". (Not to mention it came due to one of the worst breakthrough clues in the history of anything)

Maybe my fault for having that expectation, but the show had so much incredible depth throughout, building a giant awesome web.. I feel like it was just setup for more.

edit: Basically agree with aejones.

Biggest thing I'm upset about is HBO scheduled this where we have a month off until GOT.

Think the point is he's part of the cult but the reason the cult persists is the "rich men" who like the "good killing" that Errol facilitates by kidnapping children, more or less, and that Rust and Marty weren't able to win the "battle" against Tuttle's sick ministry because Tuttle's ministry is too wealthy and important to the area. Oh, and they're GOOD CHRISTIANS so clearly it's insane to suspect them.

They did tie up that the killing tracked the work contracts Tuttle's ministry had up and down the LA coast, they did tie up that Tuttle knew (tape in his safe), now we know who finds the kids at Tuttle's schools, now we at least suspect which dead Sheriff changed all the missing children reports to errors, etc. Despite this, we also heard the news report indicate that the police had told media that Tuttle's group wasn't involved.

I guess people would've enjoyed seeing a perp walk of all those responsible? Not in that world, so to speak.

EDIT: I do have to say that if there's a real hole in the story, it's probably the part where Tuttle is able to convince a large group of powerful-in-their-own-right people to tolerate the systematic kidnapping, rape, torture and murder of children for ritualistic pseudo-religious purposes without ever really explaining what the benefit to them is. Some money or campaign support? He founds schools where kids go missing? Don't the teachers notice? Really?

Maybe I'm naive though, it's not like human trafficking can possibly exist without some empowerment.

For people talking about closure, it seemed to me that most of the big players in the conspiracy were dead (Childres, Tuttle ,etc) so that it's possible the ******ed lawnmower guy was all that was left.

Yupp. That was so believable. It was incredible. He's easily the best actor alive at this point and there's a pretty good chance he's the best actor to have ever lived.

The tear THE MAC has been on since 2011 is pretty unreal.

Killer Joe
Bernie
Eastbound & Down
Mud
Magic Mike
Dallas Buyers Club
Wolf of Wall Street
True Detective

coming up he has the lead in Chris Nolan's upcoming blockbuster and then MAGIC MIKE 2 (first one underrated and he's the best part of it)

okay okay. Let's not go crazy here. Great performances lately, but lets not forget his 10 years stretch of mediocrity all throughout the 2000s.

In the beginning, middle and end. I mean, for people who feel cheated by the ending in terms of plot, it's not like the show ever really deceived you into expecting something you never got (at least imo).

It kinda told you everything you needed to know about its identity with the title.

he was the pretty boy that got pretty boy movies, it's a lot easier to get good parts after getting that first breakout performance.

+1 to everyone that mentioned real investigations not having perfect endings where every little detail is understood and tied up, seems like most of the criticism of the show is in the format of "the ending didn't give me all the answers I expect from tv shows/movies".
On that same page, I think the final 5m or so were awful, even with Mathew McConaughey doing a terrific job
