Had same thought after first episode. Friend who recommended it after reading tye book told ne to read first paragraph of wiki plot summary. Made more sense then. No spoliers:

The central premise of the novel is that gods and mythological creatures exist because people believe in them (a type of thoughtform). Immigrants to the United States brought with them spirits and gods. The power of these mythological beings has diminished as people's beliefs waned. New gods have arisen, reflecting the American obsessions with media, celebrity, technology, and drugs, among other things.

Only problem with SV is how they aren't Incorporating hanneman like they should. He should have been funding them from the start and had scenes in every episode.

I don't know what the point of having him in the first episode and now he won't fund them. Like I said the belson tangent was just dumb.

I thought there were some funny moments in this episode like Richards bad sex, gilfoyle vrs Dinesh and erlich/Monica/Laurie.

the night manager is really good 3 eps in on amazon. with tom hiddleston and hugh laurie based off one of those john le carre or whatever his name is spy novels. just a miniseries but high production value and good plot even if some holes
