There's an argument that, as a rich man who can buy insulation from the GOP's antigay policies, it's more pernicious for Thiel to say "I'm gay and so I can confidently recommend the GOP platform to other gay people," knowing he won't be affected by that platform in the way others will (should the GOP win). The question being, i.e., is it worse to use your status to advocate a platform that you know is harmful to other people who share that status? And in Thiel's case, it's not just voting GOP, but the amount of money and time he's given to the Trump effort as well.
I don't really know if I want to open that can of worms, but it's something this line of discussion has me thinking about.
