Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but if a discussion (about any topic even if it was something completely irrelevant) happened then didn't he lie under oath by saying that he hadn't had any contact with them? Like he could have had a perfectly legal conversation, but once he lies under oath during his confirmation hearing that's a pretty big issue. And if his conversation, provided it did happen (and I'm guessing the media has this one right), did happen and was legal he could have just admitted that it happened and explained what it was about.

That is correct.

The explanation that he spoke with the Russians in a different capacity is exactly the kind of lying I am entirely fed up with in my career. His defense is essentially that if you had asked him the question more narrowly, about specifically that capacity, rather than more broadly as they did, well then of course he would have taken his obligation to testify truthfully seriously and disclosed the information. But he wasn't asked, you see. Gotcha!

Even though he was specifically asked in a general way in order to require disclosure. It's perjury.

Keep in mind in addition to the general perjury statute for lying under oath there's a separate "false statements to Congress" crime that to my eyes appears easier to prove.

His popularity keeps dropping but it's on par with other PMs at this stage of their term. One of his big campaign promises was electoral reform and replacing first-past-the-post with something like a single transferable ballot (which matters here since we have 5 national parties and nobody wins a majority of the popular vote and there's lots of strategic voting against candidates vs voting for who you want and splitting the left-of-centre vote) but he decided he wasn't going to bother with that for now, which pissed a lot of people off.
