my sis wasn't particularly fond of law school, but she likes her job now. she does tax law/estate planning. she makes good bank but her monthly debt payments are hilarious.

You actually think they all genuinely regret doing all that, after the fact? They must be somewhat smart and rational people to figure out tuis was going to be the case down the road. I think it's more likely they're just trying to be humble and keep things loose and relatable when conversing with most college dropouts. (and I don't mean that as an attack on college dropouts...I am one myself).

My best friend is a lawyer and I know for a fact that he loves what he does and didn't once truly regret his path to get there...on the otherhand I also see how he downplays it (his success) infront of others.

I mean, you don't qualify for these purposes. I'm talking about people in my relatively immediate group of IRL friends, which is of course a small sample size. I assume not everyone hates it, or people wouldn't keep going. But of those people, they all complained about the workload (both its volume and nature) and the ones who are working now work a minimum of 60 hours a week, usually more. I mean I have a friend who comes home at 9 or 10 on weekdays and usually goes in weekends-- including Sunday. And they tell other people these things, and they keep going anyway. I have a friend finishing up 1L now and talking about how much she hates the workload-- things she knew going into it, and frankly I don't even think she's that interested in being a lawyer.

I'm sure it's for some people, I just really want to see my friends stop spending so much time doing something they hate.

I mean, I'm close enough friends with them that I assume they are being honest with me, and I know the kind of workload they take on. Granted, one of them seems to hate himself so it makes total sense he would do that, but in general, I think some of these people just did it because they didn't know what else to do, and it gave them something with tangible goals / measurables to focus on.

Considering when most of them were in law school I was making more than they are now (lol I'm not now obviously) I think the humility angle is highly unlikely. They know they don't have to fake anything around me.

i get the sense, as a total outsider, that a lot of people go into law because it's a profession where you read and write all day, you don't really do math, it's ostensibly 'safe', ostensibly 'noble', and can be 'important' (i.e. television shows are made featuring lawyers). law school is also something to do for the aimless liberal arts graduate.

So do you see why all the generalizations and insults you threw at the entire industry before are stupid now?
