Coming off of a 17 month layoff to fight against the best HW boxer in the world is not a good idea no matter how good you are. Even the best fighters have warm-up fights if they've been away that long. Muhammad Ali didn't fight Joe Frazier immediately after his layoff. He fought Jerry Quarry and Oscar Bonavena to get the ring rust off before fighting Frazier. But at 38, he came off of a two-year layoff to fight Larry Holmes and we all know what happened there.
Has there been a fighter who has done with Klitschko is trying to do at his age (fight for the title immediately after a long layoff) and won? Larry Holmes tried it at 37 against Mike Tyson and got knocked out. Joe Louis came off of a two-year layoff at 36 to fight Ezzard Charles for the title and lost by decision. Jack Dempsey lost to Gene Tunney after a three-year layoff but he was only 31. Jim Braddock lost to Joe Louis after a 2-year layoff in his early 30s. Jimmy Ellis was off for 2 years before getting knocked out by Joe Frazier in his comeback fight in his early 30s. Frank Bruno came back from 1 1/2 years off to get knocked by Mike Tyson in his late 20s.
The more I think about it, the more I think that this unlikely to be a particularly close fight. Joshua has youth, power, size and speed on his side.
