Re: On a scale of 1-10, how hard is it for an average guy to hit a Major League fast ball?

I never played baseball beyond 8th grade, but played collegiate tennis. so I guess my hand eye is above average. But I was able to get hits off a college pitcher who said he threw 90. I asked him to throw right down the pipe however, and I couldn't hit the curve at all. No idea how to rate this on a 1-10 scale though.

So much depends. If it is a grooved right down the middle 90mph fastball...I'd say like a 6 or 7 depending how many times you get to time it and swing and miss.

If it is something that has any sort of movement on it or 90+, I'd wager if you took someone with no baseball or athletic history, its over 20 they don't even touch it.

Will be giving it a 9. I mean, it's not harder than constructing a large hadron collider or something, so I can't give it a 10.

Having a hard time time thinking this is anything other than the most obvious 10 ever.

You did a better job of getting at the same point I was trying to make with my anecdote.... Thanks.

Re: On a scale of 1-10, how hard is it for an average guy to hit a Major League fast ball?

The answer to this question is entirely dependent upon the circumstances and how a hit is determined.

Easy to get an ACTUAL hit with fielders out there trying to stop you, knowing he's going to groove a fastball, with 3 swings like an actual at bat? 9.5

Easy to make contact with the ball with no fielders knowing he'll groove you a fastball with 10 chances? A 7.5.

And obviously, WTF is an average guy. A person who played baseball until middle or high school? Or a just random ass dude? Because a random ass dude with little to no experience playing baseball isn't doing ****.

average guy is one who probably didnt play any baseball or played like 1 year when he was 9. Not a lot of people are still playing baseball in middle or high school.

Good lord, guys, talented professional minor league players have difficulty hitting a major-league fastball and they play against the closest thing every day.

College fastballs suck compared to them.

Major league fastballs don't get grooved and they don't go straight--they move. That's what makes them a major league fastball. That and being faster than any fastball the average dude has ever seen.

Question needs to be definted better.

To even make contact would be pretty hard, but if given enough tries eventually someone would, just through random dumb luck.

To actually get a solid hit and put the ball into play with a chance of reaching base safely, super hard.

I voted 9 because I see 10 as meaning basically impossible.

I've seen season ticket holders take batting practice at Target Field. The average guy has a hard enough time hitting underhanded balls.
Similar to this, our high school team would get paid to go shag balls when corporations/businesses rented out Dodger stadium, the guys had trouble hitting whatever the speed was on those pitches. 65-70 maybe.

bring your cousin to the local batting cage. they should have 60 MPH cages, some might have higher. put him in that

then tell him to imagine that 30 MPH faster

Actually, "imagining" it 30 MPH faster doesn't really get most people where they need to be to be able to envision it. Which is part of why there are so many stupid people who have no idea how ludicrously difficult it is.

Actually seeing 90 up close and in person is really the only way to have a sense of what 90 is like.

I said a 10 and that is easier than any pitch in the mid to high 80's with movement they could throw.
