That post by jsb is annoying as much as anything because it's such an effective troll. But people DO feel that way. Even the NYT comment section has its share of tut-tutting self-righteous jackasses who feel compelled to post some variation of "well he got what he deserved". Such people need to be waterboarded until they die.

The reason people do this is because they feel the need to rationalize away the possibility that anyone, including themselves, may die at any instant. And they have no control over it. So they victim blame to deal with their own fears.

All that said, this is so tragic. I used to joke with all of my friends that I can't wait for him to be the day 1 starter for the Yankees in 2019. He was a lot of fun to watch and had the potential to be one of the greats. RIP.

Another part is that some people feel cool when they aren't like "the other sheep". They think, "Yeah they're all sad but I'm gonna be cool and not care". He's the guy who let out a contrived laugh when Andrew Beckett died from AIDS in Philadelphia while everybody else was running through their tissue boxes.

Nobody in here claimed he didn't make a stupid decision or that his stupid decision didn't contribute to his death. I'm sure everyone agrees with that, but it still doesn't make his death any less sad or tragic imo. It's impossible to go through life without making a single bad decision and death shouldn't be the penalty.

Such a sad loss. As a Nationals fan I would always look for his name on the schedule when we played the Marlins because he was so fun to watch (even though he always crushed us). RIP.

Heck, we don't even know what exactly happened. Everyone assumes they were being reckless. Maybe they weren't. Maybe something happened with the boat where they lost control and couldn't avoid the rocks.

But you are correct. No matter what, this is tragic.

One of the things I loved the most about Fernandez was that he appreciated other players so much. There were times where it looked like he enjoyed seeing hitters do well against him because he got a kick out of the competition and loved seeing athletes do great things.

So many athletes, especially in baseball, forget that it's fun to play the game. Fernandez certainly wanted to dominate and I'm sure he wasn't overjoyed when someone hit a donger off him, but he also always knew that baseball was awesome and that it was great fun to be a player AND a fan.

They are in the process of gathering information from the venue regarding the alcohol served.

If he wasn't driving I don't see why it would matter that he was at a party 90 minutes before the crash. If he knowingly got in the boat with someone who was hammered then that's stupid but very different than him being blackout drunk and driving a boat into a jetty.

So Dee Gordon hits a bomb into the upper deck in the first AB for the Marlins post Fernandez death. Diaz hits his first ever grand slam after missing two games to be with Fernandez's family. And now Tebow, who has nothing to do with any of this, but may in fact be the Messiah, goes yard on the first professional pitch he ever sees.

God making a strong push for being real.

Gets sadder and sadder when you hear a bag with his checkbook and four signed baseballs washed up on shore yesterday.
