What I don't understand is why they didn't just invite the IBM woman. That would have been the easiest, most face-savingest way to do it. The barrier goes down, as it was going to eventually anyway, and it happens in a way that is completely in-line with their standard admission policy. Maybe they sent her private feelers and got word back that she wasn't interested?

"You're worth $50 million?"
"Yes"
"OK. I'm president of this club. You have two options. You can flip me for your net worth or leave."

True story.
I dunno where you heard this story, but it wasn't Hootie. It was many more years ago, involving the club's original chairman, Clifford Roberts. Who was every bit a badass as Hootie, probly more.

The member was playing a card game, iirc it was cribbage, and Roberts proposed a game of cribbage for his net worth, not a "flip." Roberts' net worth was in the hundreds of millions. He was an investment banker before Augusta Natl was built.

The only reason it's big news is because of the sensationalism of the media.

Augusta National is a private club and can do whatever they want, there are still a handful of male only golf clubs in this country. Never have understood why this should be news when there are tons of women only clubs of various sorts. St. Andrews has a Ladies Putting Club that takes over the Himalayas on a weekly basis, there is no Men's Putting Club. You don't hear any trouble with that.

Martha Burk is an idiot, she had absolutely nothing to do with what happened today. She was completely rebuffed in 2003 and was never able to strong arm the club as she hoped. Regardless, there are many other issues she should have focused on that are much more important.

Is today's happening a good thing? I guess. Certainly not a bad thing. But regardless of public opinion, Augusta National is going to do exactly what they want when they want and nobody will ever tell them otherwise. They are the big dog and everybody has to play by their rules, they wield that much power.

I'd say that makes it more likely to be a tall tale.

seems like bull**** just because an Augusta member would know not to brag about a $50M net worth

Hootie is less of a baller in my eyes now, sad week indeed

Another comment attributed to Roberts is: "As long as I'm alive, all the golfers will be white and all the caddies will be black."[2] [3]
does not sound badass to me. It sounds pretty horrible.

I saw a piece in the nation about how these aren't the right kind of women and how this has done nothing to further women's place in a man's world. Progs are all butthurt it's a republican icon and some super rich bish.

This is almost certainly true.

Progs upset that poor men aren't admitted, either?

SarcasticRat is right, and articknight from the first page-- an embarrassing display by both both parties.
