Landa would 100% be a GC leader at any other team. The only reason he isn't leading Sky at the Vuelta, and had to share co-leadership at the Giro is because of his nationality

Wow, on the UK highlights show they showed two guys getting penalties for taking a bottle in the final 10k and also Bardet seemingly doing the same but with no penalty.

Strange. More info from cannondale manager twitter feed:

Difference might be whether you drink from the water or simply pour it on yourself?

Also do not be surprised if Landa starts riding for himself at some point in the next week. He was very publicly against coming here to ride for Froome (he wanted to rest and then lead Sky at the Vuelta) and his contract is up at the end of the season with 0 chance he decides to return. If Froome cracks I would be more surprised if Landa waits than if he didnt.

Just watched the nbc replay, that was a hell of a stage. Few thoughts

Froome- too skinny, needs to put on a few pounds if he wants to get back in previous years form

Quintana - way too skinny, probably needs to gain 15-20 pounds if he wants to get back in contention for a podium spot.

Contador- impressive this guy is still riding at all. I remember watching him and Armstrong dominate the tour 20+ years ago.

Aru- rooting for this guy to win. Doesn't seem fair that froome always has three teammates to draft behind while aru is going up the mountain by himself. Cycling should be an individual sport.

I can't think what else they can say (other than it's because he's French, obviously). But, it looks 99% that he takes a swig or two and then pours the rest over himself. Once you've nailed the other two it looks ridiculous to give him the benefit of any doubt to me.

Penalties removed for everyone

Anyway it is totally ******ed to forbid someone to drink water

Not a good look for the organizers to

1) Give the penalty while sparing their french boy
2) Backpedal once they realize they've been caught

I've never understood the rule, but I guess if you can take water outside the proper zones from fans then you could get unfortunate things happening - like spiked water or just unpopular riders not been treated the same etc.

Regardless, embarrassing officiating. It almost looks like they realised that they'd have to punish a potential French winner in very close Tour so they though **** it, let's forget the rule.

A couple years ago, Froome took a gel outside the feed zone and accepted the penalty because he bonked that stage. Still ended up winning Le Tour. So you can't assume that he's in serious danger of not winning because of a single bad stage.

The last mountain Mur de Péguère has 12,2% avg for the last 3,3km. Will be super sick.

Perfect day for the breakaway though. People will be tired from yesterday, no classification contender will try to make the difference yet difficult enough to eliminate the sprinters from contention. It's almost as if today was france independance day

Someone tell the guys they're all going to lose >1min on time trial to Froome and there is no more climbing for a few days, clearly not looking good right now. don't want to give him the chance to feel better in the alpes

Landa could legit be in yellow here. Unlikely but possible. What do Sky do then?

Also does Froome attack to reel them in or is he happy to mark Aru for now knowing that his team mate can take yellow? I have no idea what's going on. I haven't seen this before.

Was pretty clear that Froome didn't want Landa in yellow. Should have made Aru/Bardet/Martin chase the entire last 25k. Also don't know why they had Kwiat wait on the last climb. He would have been a massive favorite in that sprint.
