loss of field position / the downside of missing are huge factors why coaches don't attempt longer field goals. what kickers are "capable of in an end game scenario" is not well shown by the kicks that coaches decide to kick at all other times
we had almost the same discussion in the Broncos/Chiefs game. coaches (correctly) are almost never gonna send out the field goal kicker in the 3rd quarter to try a 60 yard field goal, but many NFL kickers are still very live (30% ish) to make that kick
said another way: go look at Hopkins season long high of 53
here. it would have been good from a much longer distance. maybe even 60!
