hm? isn't there a point at which increasing variance as rex grossman does could be beneficial? i suppose not for a team as good as the chicago bears.

The better the team is, the worse variance is. The worse the team is, the better variance is.

I think an argument could also be made that a good O / bad D team is more apt to benefit from higher variance and that the bad O / good D team is hurt by it.

all this is mitigated by the fact that grossman just sucks anyways.

Let's put it this way, in his mind, Grossman is the best option at QB...so, at the QB position he gives you best chance to win. But forcing him to make plays decreases the chance you win. He's basically saying you have to put someone in at QB, but because Rexy is the "best" option, you can't let him throw the ball much or you'll turn it over, and increase likelihood of losing. It's like putting Timmy Lupus in the outfield and hitting him 9th. Someone has to fill those two "voids" but you better not need him to actually make plays for you.

Obviously you can't just hand it off everytime though.

His conclusion (trade Dunn and Griffey for prospects) may be correct but his analysis is eye-poppingly bad. Trade Dunn for a speedy outfielder. Right.

Let's not forget the sack of poo team that won the World Series last year. The best team with the best statistics does not always win.

Wrong. Both LSU and Auburn went to BCS bowls in the years you are referring to.

Barry Sanders, not even close.
I love Barry Sanders. I could vote for him as best NFL player ever. However, all the "it's not even close" [censored] needs to stop in these forums. Almost always when some genius claims it's not even close, it is actually very close.

Just because someone says something that turns out to be wrong in hindsight doesn't make it stupid. A lot of people had high hopes for Drew Henson in the NFL although I wasn't one of them.

It absolutely is stupid if the person says it definitively and without a hint of doubt. How about "He has the potential to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL."

boy why don't announcers just hedge everything they say - 'he might, if circumstances are favorable, grow into something resembling a franchise quarterback, someday!'

meh, the guy was wrong - hyperbole is a broadcaster's job

Yeah, I'm just a bitter Detroit fan reminding everyone that OPS and run differential don't always tell the whole story. This is especially true when an 82-win team featuring Jeff Weaver and Anthony Reyes in its starting rotation wins the World Series.

Its like my sole job around here is to tell people that aces sometimes get cracked.

Last night in the Phillies/Braves broadcast, the Phillies anouncer known endearingly as "Sarge" (Gary Matthews Sr)asserted that he does not get drunk when he drinks a bottle of wine during a full moon. Among his other beverages of choice are cognac or "a little cider."

Kalas then asked Sarge whether he knew if the moon had a similar effect on most people. In typical Sarge matter-of-fact fashion, he answered, "I don't know. You asked how it affects me."
