Be sure to catch Michael Smerconish's "Let me Finish" commentary at the end of today's broadcast. He starts off his commentary by mentioning that Louis Freeh is taking a very close look into the circumstances surrounding Mike McQueary's hiring and promotion as the wide receivers coach over Kenny Jackson, a more qualified former PSU All American who was available at the time. Smerconish flat out states that McQueary got the job because he had something on his resume that Jackson didn't ... knowledge of Jerry Sandusky and what went on in the Lasch building shower. If that is an accurate reading of the situation, one might infer that Mike McQueary, in effect, blackmailed Joe Paterno. McQueary probably didn't have to say anything blunt to the old man, but the unstated threat was clear: "Coach, you hire me and I stay quiet about Sandusky." So Mike McQueary chooses to remain silent (knowing that young boys are being raped by Sandusky) in exchange for a coaching job that he probably would not have gotten otherwise.

Louis Freeh's report is going to make for some really interesting reading. I have a feeling Penn State's Board of Trustees will use Freeh's report as a justification for cleaning house in the football program. Every coach and assistant coach still on staff who was hired by and worked for Joe Paterno will be fired.

We need to know the amount of Kinetic Energy the statue will have when it hits the ground. That's K=1/2mv^2

In order to get v (velocity at impact) we need to use Sqrt(2gh) where g=Gravity and h=height.

Then we need to know how far that bastard is going to bury itself into the ground when it hits in order to calculate the amount of force in Newtons it's going to generate.

For my calulations I assumed it would bury itself ~30 meters into the earth (I'm assuming it hits at the 50 yard line for max effect) but that could be WAY off.

Dropping the staute on the 50 yard line of Beaver Stadium wouldn't incur maximum State College coverage. According to the map I just looked at online, if you want to centralize the drop on the middle of State College, impact would be roughly on the other side of The Phyrst, which is a pretty popular PSU bar I've spent some time in.... I'd miss it, granted..... but I must accept such collateral damage.

Joe's commitment to uncovering the full truth sounds a lot like OJ's search for the real killer. What a load of horse ****. His family needs to just STFU right now.

You don't need to know how deep it will bury itself to know how much kinetic energy there is. The burying can effectively be considered part of the explosion where teh dirt/sand absorbs a big chunk of the kinetic energy.

Just for comparison's sake... if we dropped that statue from about 350,000km (just short of stationary orbit), it would accelerate to about 25km/s. If Paterno's spirit somehow prevents the loss of mass... 700kg+that velocity = 2.45*10~11, roughly 1/250 of Little Boy' or just under 60 tons of TNT. With the dampening effect of the football field... it's probably just about enough to cause a really loud bang and destroy the stadium but not quite enough to destroy the PSU campus.

Huh? I'm pretty sure you need to know the burying distance in order to talk about the force of impact, KE is already found out by the first equation.

According to my calculations, if you drop the statue from that height it'll only cause a bang if there's no grass on the field.

That is correct. The burying distance is essentially a cushion that absorbs kinetic energy. That's why they blew up the atomic bombs in the air.

The reason I did it this way is so it's the equivalent of blowing up 60 tons of TNT at the 50 yard line.

Do we even need a heat shield? It's falling from a dead stop, not entering the atmosphere at orbital velocity. Well... how are we dropping it?

Gotta attach a heat shield, it's the only way to be sure.
