As a PSU alum, I am ashamed for my university. Even the Paterno nuthuggers don't have a hair to hang on without admitting to be pedo supporters.

You all are nuts if you don't think that your school is capable of doing the exact same thing as Penn State. It's tough to underestimate the levels people will stoop to cover their own asses, just look at how virtually every single school in the country deals with violent players. Sweep it under the rug if you can, suspend them for the least damaging games if it becomes public and you have to do something, because you gotta win.

My actual (well former as of two months ago) school is Arkansas, and I'm pretty sure that they would have handled this better. This is something that me and my gf talked about yesterday while reading the Freeh report. They quickly and decisively handled a much lesser scandal in a manner that made me proud, so I'm not sure why in a worse situation they would **** the bed rather than do the right thing.

I would think a worse situation would make them more likely to cover up.

If it's actually true that this would've been handled in a similar fashion at most schools with big-time athletic programs, that gives weight to the argument for MORE - not less - punishment. Hell, I'd argue that ANY institutions that inspire reverence to the point that people would cover up child rape in order to protect them should be demolished. That is some Nazi-ass **** we are talking about here. ****ing burn them all.

One of the sad components of the scandal, the part which cast aspersion on humanity (much less the seriously impaired version of it displayed by Sandusky and his enablers), was what happened in its wake: the community response.

THAT's what I'm interested in knowing about in other schools. Clearly colleges cover up any - and every- thing they possibly can. But what do the alums/current students of other insular schools do after the grand jury report has been issued? After they know what their people did.

I think we get a mix of responses; certainly some schools would handle it better than others, probably very few "perfectly" (whatever that means), but probably also very few cover it up for long. But I don't think you get a complete, systemic coverup without the perfect storm you have at Penn State. I mean, Paterno had so much power there and you look at all the other things he covered up. Even at other schools that worship football, players still get arrested and ****. Paterno had so much power he was literally able to keep his players above the law.

I'm pretty cynical, but I still think what happened here is extraordinary. I think the amount of power and sway Paterno had over Penn State (and all of Happy Valley) is extreme and unusual even for college football. Same with the cult mentality surrounding Paterno and the program.
