Okay, I gave it another shot

Favorite part so far was the guy being like "Spanier would have used something stronger than 'vulnerable' to describe child rape, therefore he didn't know"

So basically it said what you thought so

This whole thing has been an interesting foray into how the desire to see a specific conclusion colors perception.

I think I like the Luzhin Defense more, but Lolita ends up more popular/assigned due to the taboo

BTW, JoePa loved the classics.
He might have thought this man-boy love (παιδεραστία) was ok.

So, so much of this is true

and I’m among the first to laugh at the notion that Louis Freeh, who actually did help cover up Waco, where dozens of children were actually murdered by their government and anybody with CNN could clearly tell as much, can get on his moral high horse about what was at most a recommendation made by Joe Paterno. That being said, it’s probably just not the time for this.

Jay Bilas is dumb. Really, really dumb.

Quote:
To sanction Penn State with a bowl ban, a television ban, loss of scholarships, loss of practice time or other penalties would do little or nothing to punish the monstrous behavior of Sandusky or the cowardly cover-up and indefensible inaction of Spanier, Schultz, Curley and Paterno.

Such sanctions would punish those left behind to clean up the mess, and they would further hamstring Penn State from moving forward and doing things the right way. Ironically, such sanctions could damage Penn State's ability to make money that ultimately would be available to victims.

Um....he's ignoring what's responsible for what happened.

Namely, a permissive, idolatrous culture that General Sherman is best fit to deal with. Not "the criminal justice system"

Also, he's just plain wrong about the victim payment.

They will be compensated. Then the hammer will (or at least, ostensibly, should) drop.

there were a lot of things bilas missed in his article, no doubt. all I'm saying is that of the things he did mention, the only thing that is a bit absurd is being unable to pay out the victims. but if for some crazy reasons 200 kids come forward with proof then all of a sudden they could be facing a university-wide liquidation sale.

the culture you speak of is identical to every other one except (possibly) for a more stringent set of sex crime laws.

This is an interesting point. I was wondering what people in Alabama and Louisiana thought of the likelihood of something like this ever having occurred, currently occurring, or possibly occurring in their CFB programs. Also, what would be the local response if it did happen in one of these places. Or Lincoln, NE. Where, like happy valley, all they have (or in hv's case, had) is college football.

this is 100% why bilas is wrong and why the entire program needs the hammer dropped on it hard. i couldnt have said it better myself.

I think she's doing celebrity and Olympic stuff, seems like a complete waste of time. Beadle at the USA Track trials is not anywhere close to the optimal environment

yeah, do people actually believe something like this was much more likely at PSU than any other school that worships sports? This is the "they got just happened to get caught" scenario.

I think part of the problem, a part you wouldn't necessarily have in those other places, is that Paterno's longevity gave him such complete sway over everything at Penn State. No matter how important football is to those other places, there's no way everyone just defers to the head coach on a matter like this. Maybe if Bear Bryant or Tom Osborne were still coaching when it happened.

Well, considering it did happen there and it didn't happen anywhere else, I'm going with "infinitely more likely".

edit: If you think an institutional coverup to protect a serial child rapist is a "just happened to get caught" scenario then something is wrong with your brain
