More Hints:

The guy has an Olympic Gold Medal

The world record I am speaking of is not in an Olympic event.

Although he was the best in the world in his Olympic event, he was better yet at events that were similar that were not part of the Olympics. In fact he was unimaginably good at them. The difference between him and the second best in the world at the time, was HUGE. Much more than the difference between Tiger Woods and whoever was second. Which is of course the reason that even modern day athletes are probably incapable of surpassing him.

Might very well be true. I just imagined it as an event that possibly hasn't been competed in over the last few decades.

So is this a track & fielder?
You say tens of millions would recognize his name.
The only well known track & fielder from that era that I can think of is Al Oerter.
Anyone else know of other famous ones?

His claim to one-arm pressing strength has been disputed, but he may have pressed at least a 300 lb (140 kg). dumbbell.
so it's an unverified record. that doesn't mean it necessarily happened.

I think I once read about some sprinter who was also insanely good at running backward, and often staged exhibitions where he would race backward against other people running normally, and win. Please tell me we aren't talking about that guy.

Edit: Good, we weren't talking about him. We were talking about something that might have happened... or not... instead.
