If I was a professional athlete and winning an Olympic medal wouldn't do much for my brand that is exactly how I would approach it.

Throw in 3rd world and dangerous country and you would have to pay me 7 figures to even go.

After this is over we'll all be laughing about how silly and overblown everyone's concerns were given that only 50 or so people died

Why not? It may not get as many eyeballs now with the dropouts but if you watch the pga tour regularly I'm not sure why you wouldn't have interest in watching the Olympic tournament.

Ok I should have worded that better. I was referring to dkgo's point about women golfers going to Rio because it gives them eyeballs that they usually wouldn't get. I'm wondering if there's really people who usually don't watch golf that now suddenly would bc it's for olympic medals?

That's the great thing about the Olympics in general, watching stuff that isn't on TV that often, like BMX races or archery

Yeah I know and was expecting that point, but competitions like that are usually over with in a couple of minutes. The usual golf broadcasting style doesn't lend to itself to that very well imo

Add Canada's top tennis player Milos Roanic to the list of athletes skipping RIO.

Not really the fault of RIO, but definitely lolworthy...

Apparently there are discussions going on about banning all Russian athletes. Not just the 'athletics' or track and field athletes... that already happened. All Russian competitors. New accusations from WADA that the Russian government ran doping programs in lots of sports.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...igation-finds/

MASSIVE lols if the #3 world sporting nation is just completely and utterly banned from competition.

An investigation by the global agency that polices drug cheating in sports has found “beyond a reasonable doubt” that the Russian government ran a widespread doping regime for years in multiple Olympic sports, calling into question whether any Russian athletes should be permitted to compete at Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next month.

Russia’s ministry of sport covered up positive doping results by Olympic athletes for years in both Summer and Winter Olympic sports, the investigation found, and Russian intelligence agents participated in an elaborate covert scheme at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi to replace tainted urine samples of cheating Russian athletes with clean ones.

“It was a fail-safe method of permitting cheating Russian athletes to compete while using performance-enhancing substances,” said Richard McLaren, a Canadian lawyer and sports ethics expert who led the investigation, in a Monday morning news conference in Toronto.
Some wild **** to essentially have the KGB helping your athletes cover up positive tests.

Never understood why the ban originally stopped at track and field athletes. So Russia ran this massive doping coverup but they only do it in one sport?

Meb, I think there were two investigations. First one has already concluded and released a while ago, and was just focused on the track and field. The second investigation started after the first and is just getting ready to release, and deals with a multiple-sport conspiracy.

I don't know how you ban Russia and not China if the concern is systemic doping programs run by the gov't.

Also, I hope doping is completely eradicated and weightlifting totals drop 10% across the board and the winning 100m times creep back towards 10s.

The difference between their medal count in 2004 and 2008 is absurd (especially the uptick in gold). Obviously cheating. Then they went back down in 2012. The US seems to get about 100 medals every summer Olympics.

I mean most host nations get a little bump, but nothing like China's. Even the bump the UK got from 2008 to 2012 could at least be explained by the drop in China's medals.

Lots of people watch stuff purely because it's the Olympics. I bought tickets for the World Judo championships on the day the competition started. For the Beijing Olympics I ended up paying a scalper 15x face value for one session.

Blake has already served a ban.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yohan_Blake#Drug_ban

Quote:
Prior to the 2009 World Championships, Blake (along with Marvin Anderson and Sheri-Ann Brooks) tested positive for the stimulant 4-methyl-2-hexanamine. A disciplinary panel organised by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) cleared him of a doping infraction on the grounds that the drug was not on the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned list. However, JADCO appealed their own panel's ruling, stating that the athlete should be disciplined as the drug was similar in structure to the banned substance tuaminoheptane. As the panel would resolve the issue after the World Championships, the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association took the precaution of withdrawing Blake from the relay race. The appeals tribunal decided that a ban would be appropriate, and Blake and the three other sprinters each received a three-month ban from competition.
Bolt is the only person in the top 5 100m sprinters that hasn't served a ban. His times follow the pattern that you would expect from someone that is clean, peaking around age 26-27 then getting gradually slower. Gay and Christie pulled out PBs when they were in their 30s, which is an obvious sign of cheating. I'm not saying Bolt is clean. However, I'm not aware of any smoking gun evidence besides the fact that he's the best.
